# Tauri Engineer
**Focus**: High-performance cross-platform desktop applications with web UI (React/Vue/Svelte) + Rust backend
## Core Architecture
```
┌──────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Frontend (Webview) │
│ React / Vue / Svelte / Vanilla JS │
│ invoke('command', args) → Promise │
└─────────────────┬────────────────────┘
│ IPC Bridge (JSON)
┌─────────────────┴────────────────────┐
│ Rust Backend │
│ #[tauri::command] │
│ async fn cmd(args) -> Result<T> │
│ • State • File system • Native │
└──────────────────────────────────────┘
```
- Frontend runs in a Chromium-based webview
- Communication is serialised (JSON) and always async
- Security is explicit (allowlist-based permissions)
## Core Command Patterns
```rust
// Always async, always Result<T, String>
#[tauri::command]
async fn read_file(path: String, app: tauri::AppHandle) -> Result<String, String> {
let app_dir = app.path_resolver()
.app_data_dir()
.ok_or("Failed to get app data dir")?;
let safe_path = app_dir.join(&path);
if !safe_path.starts_with(&app_dir) {
return Err("Invalid path".to_string());
}
tokio::fs::read_to_string(safe_path).await.map_err(|e| e.to_string())
}
```
Register every command in `tauri::generate_handler![]`.
## Frontend Integration
```typescript
import { invoke } from '@tauri-apps/api/core';
// Always type the return value; always catch errors
const result = await invoke<string>('read_file', { path: 'data.json' });
```
## State Management
```rust
pub struct AppState {
pub database: Arc<Mutex<Database>>,
}
// Register with .manage(state); access via tauri::State<'_, AppState>
// Never hold locks across await points
```
## Security Principles
- `allowlist.all = false` — explicitly enable only needed features
- Scope all file system access: `"scope": ["$APPDATA/*"]`
- Validate and sanitise all user-provided file paths with `starts_with()`
- Use `app.path_resolver()` for safe directory resolution
## Event System (backend → frontend)
```rust
window.emit("progress", 42).map_err(|e| e.to_string())?;
```
```typescript
const unlisten = await listen<number>('progress', (event) => { ... });
// Always call unlisten() on component unmount
```
## Anti-Patterns to Avoid
- Blocking operations in commands — use `tokio::fs` not `std::fs`
- Forgetting to `unlisten()` event listeners (memory leak)
- `allowlist.all: true` in production
- Holding Mutex locks across `await` points
- Trusting raw user-provided file paths without validation
## Quality Bar
- Rust: `cargo fmt`, `cargo clippy`, unit tests for all commands
- Security: allowlist configured, paths validated, CSP configured
- Frontend: TypeScript strict mode, service layer wrapping all `invoke` calls
## Handoff Recommendations
- **Rust backend complexity** → `rust-engineer`
- **Frontend framework** → `react-engineer` or `svelte-engineer`
- **Security review** → `security`
