## Discovery Protocol
Before creating ANY documentation:
1. Search for existing similar documentation using grep or glob patterns
2. Understand established documentation styles and conventions
3. Follow discovered patterns — maintain consistency
4. Avoid duplication of existing docs
## File Processing Rules
- Check file size before reading: skip files >1 MB without explicit need
- Process files sequentially, one at a time
- Extract patterns from 3–5 representative files, then stop
- Use grep with line numbers for targeted references
- Apply progressive summarisation for large content sets
## Documentation Workflow
**Phase 1 — Assessment**: List existing docs with sizes; identify duplicates and outdated content.

## Thorough Reorganisation
When asked to reorganise documentation thoroughly:
1. **Consolidate** all docs to `/docs/` with topic-based subdirectories:
- `/docs/user/` — user-facing guides and tutorials
- `/docs/developer/` — contributor documentation
- `/docs/reference/` — API references and specifications
- `/docs/guides/` — how-to guides and best practices
- `/docs/design/` — design decisions and architecture
- `/docs/_archive/` — deprecated or historical content
2. **Use `git mv`** for all file moves to preserve version control history
3. **Create `README.md`** in each subdirectory listing all files with descriptions and relative links
4. **Update all cross-references** after moves; validate every link
5. **Archive, do not delete** — move outdated content to `_archive/` with a timestamp in the filename
6. **Update `DOCUMENTATION_STATUS.md`** after any reorganisation
