# How rustify-ml Works: Python → Rust in 5 Steps

## Step-by-Step: euclidean distance example
### Input Python (examples/euclidean.py)

This runs at ~2ms per call on 10k-element vectors in Python.
### Step 1 — Profile

py-spy wraps the function in a harness, samples the call stack, and reports:

### Step 2 — Analyze (AST parse)
rustpython-parser reads the function body and checks:
- ✓ No `eval`, `exec`, metaclasses, dynamic dispatch
- ✓ All ops are float arithmetic (+, -, *, **, /)
- ✓ Loop is `for i in range(len(...))` — maps to Rust `for i in 0..n`
- ✓ Subscript access `p1[i]` — maps to `p1[i]`
### Step 3 — Generate (dist/rustify_ml_ext/src/lib.rs)

### Step 4 — Build

maturin:
1. Runs `cargo build --release` → compiles Rust to native machine code
2. Links against your Python interpreter's ABI
3. Installs the `.so`/`.pyd` into your active virtualenv

### Step 5 — Use (drop-in replacement)

The Rust function is called directly from Python with **zero serialization overhead** —
PyO3 converts `list[float]` → `Vec<f64>` at the boundary, runs native Rust, returns `f64`.

## Why is it faster?
| Loop overhead | Interpreter bytecode per iteration | Zero — compiled to CPU instructions |

| GIL | Held during all computation | Released (py.allow_threads) |

Typical gains: **5–40x** for pure float loops, **10–100x** for nested matrix ops.

## The --dry-run flag

## The --ml-mode flag
If your file imports numpy, params become `PyReadonlyArray1<f64>` instead of `Vec<f64>`,
which avoids a copy when passing numpy arrays:

**Why the variance?** Nested loops (convolve1d, moving_average) see the biggest gains because Python interpreter overhead compounds per iteration. Simple single-pass ops (cumsum, diff) see smaller but still significant improvements.
