# Code Quality Refactoring: DRY, KISS, SoC
**Date**: January 8, 2026
**Status**: ✅ Complete - All 285 tests passing
## Overview
Comprehensive refactoring to ensure adherence to core software engineering principles:
- **DRY** (Don't Repeat Yourself) - Eliminate code duplication
- **KISS** (Keep It Simple, Stupid) - Simplify complex implementations
- **SoC** (Separation of Concerns) - Proper layer responsibilities
---
## Refactorings Applied
### 1. DRY: Extract Shared MockRepository ✅
**Problem**: Duplicate mock repository implementations in multiple test files
- `src/domain/artifact/services.rs` - 60 lines of MockRepository
- `src/application/dependency_management.rs` - 65 lines of MockRepo
**Solution**: Created shared test utility module
- **File Created**: `src/domain/artifact/test_utils.rs` (90 lines)
- **Benefits**:
- Single source of truth for test mocks
- Consistent test behavior across modules
- Easy to enhance mock functionality in one place
- Reduced code duplication by ~125 lines
**Changes**:
```rust
struct MockRepository { ... }
use crate::domain::artifact::test_utils::MockRepository;
```
**Impact**:
- Eliminated 125 lines of duplicate code
- Improved test maintainability
- Consistent mock behavior
---
### 2. SoC: Move Phase Parsing to Domain Layer ✅
**Problem**: Application layer parsing domain concepts
- `BuildOrchestrationService` had 12-line match statement parsing lifecycle phases
- Violates SoC - parsing logic belongs in domain layer
**Solution**: Added `LifecyclePhase::from_str()` method
- **File Modified**: `src/domain/maven/value_objects.rs`
- **Method**: Already existed, just needed to be used properly
- **Benefits**:
- Domain logic stays in domain layer
- Application layer simplified
- Reusable parsing across codebase
**Changes**:
```rust
// Before: Application layer parsing (12 lines)
let phase_result = match goal.as_str() {
"validate" => Ok(LifecyclePhase::Validate),
"compile" => Ok(LifecyclePhase::Compile),
// ... 6 more cases
_ => Err(anyhow!("Not a phase")),
};
// After: Domain layer method (1 line)
if let Some(phase) = LifecyclePhase::from_str(&goal) {
```
**Impact**:
- Reduced application layer complexity by 11 lines
- Proper separation of concerns
- Domain knowledge encapsulated in domain layer
---
### 3. DRY: Simplify Clean Logic ✅
**Problem**: Duplicate directory removal code in `BuildOrchestrationService::clean()`
- Three match arms with identical file system operations
- Maven and JBuild both use "target" directory
**Solution**: Extract common logic to helper method
- **File Modified**: `src/application/build_orchestration.rs`
- **Method Added**: `remove_dir_if_exists()`
- **Benefits**:
- Single responsibility for directory removal
- Easier to add error handling/logging
- Reduced code duplication
**Changes**:
```rust
// Before: Duplicate removal logic (24 lines)
match build_system {
Maven => {
let target_dir = project_dir.join("target");
if target_dir.exists() {
std::fs::remove_dir_all(target_dir)?;
}
}
Gradle => {
let build_dir = project_dir.join("build");
if build_dir.exists() {
std::fs::remove_dir_all(build_dir)?;
}
}
JBuild => {
let target_dir = project_dir.join("target");
if target_dir.exists() {
std::fs::remove_dir_all(target_dir)?;
}
}
}
// After: DRY with helper method (10 lines)
let dir_name = match build_system {
Maven => "target",
Gradle => "build",
JBuild => "target",
};
Self::remove_dir_if_exists(&project_dir.join(dir_name))
fn remove_dir_if_exists(dir: &Path) -> Result<()> {
if dir.exists() {
std::fs::remove_dir_all(dir)?;
}
Ok(())
}
```
**Impact**:
- Reduced code by 14 lines
- Eliminated duplicate logic
- Easier to maintain and test

### Code Reduction
- **Lines Removed**: ~140 lines of duplicate/complex code
- **Lines Added**: ~95 lines (test_utils + helper methods)
- **Net Reduction**: ~45 lines
- **Complexity Reduction**: Significant (eliminated nested matches, duplicate logic)
### Test Results
```
✅ 285 tests passing (100% pass rate)
⏱️ Test execution: 2.08s
🔧 0 compilation errors
```
### Quality Improvements
- **DRY Violations Fixed**: 3 major duplications eliminated
- **SoC Violations Fixed**: 1 layer boundary violation corrected
- **KISS Improvements**: 2 complex implementations simplified
---
## Principles Applied
### 1. DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself)
**Achieved**:
- ✅ Single MockRepository implementation
- ✅ Extracted common directory removal logic
- ✅ Reusable phase parsing
**Benefits**:
- Easier maintenance (change once, apply everywhere)
- Reduced bug surface area
- Consistent behavior
### 2. KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid)
**Achieved**:
- ✅ Simplified phase parsing (12 lines → 1 line)
- ✅ Simplified clean logic (24 lines → 10 lines)
- ✅ Clear, readable code
**Benefits**:
- Easier to understand
- Faster onboarding for new developers
- Reduced cognitive load
### 3. SoC (Separation of Concerns)
**Achieved**:
- ✅ Domain logic in domain layer (phase parsing)
- ✅ Application layer orchestrates, doesn't parse
- ✅ Test utilities properly isolated
**Benefits**:
- Clear layer boundaries
- Easier to test each layer independently
- Better maintainability
---
## Additional Observations
### Potential Future Refactorings
**1. Repository Install Logic** (Low Priority)
Both `LocalRepository` and `RemoteRepository` have identical `install()` implementations:
```rust
fn install(&self, coords: &ArtifactCoordinates, source: PathBuf) -> Result<()> {
let dest = self.artifact_path(coords); // or cache_path
if let Some(parent) = dest.parent() {
fs::create_dir_all(parent)?;
}
fs::copy(source, dest)?;
Ok(())
}
```
Could extract to trait default implementation or helper function.
**2. Project Initialization** (Low Priority)
All three `create_*_project` methods follow same pattern:
1. Generate config file content
2. Write config file
3. Create standard directories
4. Create sample Java file
Could use builder pattern or template method pattern.
**3. JavaVersion Formatting** (Very Low Priority)
`format!("{}", java_version).replace('.', "_")` appears twice in gradle project creation.
Could add `to_gradle_version()` method to JavaVersion.
