Knobs on the merge itself. Passed by reference rather than encoded as cargo features: features are additive and unify across a dependency graph, so a strict feature would silently change behaviour for one consumer the moment a second consumer enabled it.

strict: bool

Error when a layer changes the kind of an existing key.

shallow: Vec<Vec<String>>

Key paths whose objects merge shallowly: each child is replaced wholesale instead of recursed into — jq’s a + b rather than a * b, at that path. The empty path is the root. A path that is missing, or is not an object on both sides, changes nothing.
