Why a rewrite could not be applied.

Every span handed to [apply_fields] is validated, replaced or not, so a malformed one fails the same way regardless of what the callback returns.

Variants (Non-exhaustive)

Non-exhaustive enums could have additional variants added in future. Therefore, when matching against variants of non-exhaustive enums, an extra wildcard arm must be added to account for any future variants.
