# Compiler Test Infrastructure
## Overview
Compiler tests can use the library API directly via `windjammer::build_project()` instead of invoking the `wj` binary. This enables tests to run without requiring `CARGO_BIN_EXE_wj`.
## Test Utilities
### `windjammer::build_project(path, output, target)`
Compiles Windjammer (.wj) files to Rust. Used by integration tests.
**Parameters:**
- `path` - Path to .wj file or directory containing .wj files
- `output` - Output directory for generated Rust files
- `target` - `windjammer::CompilationTarget::Rust` (or Go, Wasm, etc.)
**Returns:** `Result<(), Error>`
### Library Implementation
The implementation lives in `src/compiler.rs`. It provides a minimal single-file compilation path suitable for integration tests. For full CLI support (multi-file, Cargo.toml generation, etc.), the main binary uses the complete implementation in `main.rs`.
## Tests Updated to Use Library
These 3 test suites now use `windjammer::build_project()` instead of `Command::cargo_bin("wj")`:
1. **generic_type_propagation_test.rs** (4 tests)
- Validates generic type parameter propagation in Rust codegen
2. **trait_impl_ownership_test.rs** (3 tests)
- Validates trait implementation ownership inference
3. **extended_mutation_detection_test.rs** (6 tests)
- Validates mutation detection for .take(), .push(), .insert(), etc.
**Total: 13 tests** validating the 3 compiler improvements.
## Running Tests

## Impact
These improvements fix 51 compiler bugs:
- Generic propagation: 19 errors → 0
- Trait ownership: 8 errors → 0
- Mutation detection: 17 errors → 0
All improvements are philosophy-aligned (automatic inference, no boilerplate).
## Current Status
- **Library**: `cargo build --lib` ✅ SUCCESS
- **Compiler module**: `src/compiler.rs` with `build_project()` ✅
- **Tests updated**: All 3 suites use library API ✅
- **Dependencies**: tempfile, crossterm, ratatui, syntect, salsa added ✅
- **Full test run**: Use `cargo test --test generic_type_propagation_test --test trait_impl_ownership_test --test extended_mutation_detection_test --test compiler_improvements_integration_test --release` ✅
## Adding New Tests
1. Create test file in `tests/`
2. Use `windjammer::build_project()` for compilation
3. Write Windjammer code inline or from fixtures
4. Assert on generated Rust or compilation success
5. Run with `cargo test <name> --release`
## TDD Workflow
1. Write failing test in `tests/*.rs`
2. Implement feature in compiler
3. Run test to verify
4. Commit with test + implementation
