3. **Discovered** the key insight: config crate's serde integration is irreplaceable
4. **Designed** a wrapping architecture that preserves serde while adding features
5. **Documented** complete consensus with implementation guidance

### The Answer

**Don't replace config. Wrap it.**

The config crate provides two irreplaceable services:
1. **Multi-source composition** (files, env, custom)
2. **Serde integration** (Config implements Deserializer)

These are too valuable to reimplement. Instead:
- Keep config crate for merging and deserialization
- Add SourceMetadata wrapper layer on top
- Build provenance tracking in parallel with merging
- All new features become optional layers above
