# Phase 2: Environment Variable Customization

## Overview

Phase 2 adds customizable environment variable naming conventions to LoadingOptions trait. Applications can override default prefix (APP) and separator (__) to match their naming conventions.

Follows **TDD RED → GREEN → REFACTOR** cycle:
- **RED** (Phase 2.1): Create test file with failing tests
- **GREEN** (Phase 2.2): Implement trait methods
- **INTEGRATION** (Phase 2.3): Verify Phase 1 integration + backward compatibility
- **VALIDATION**: All tests pass, quality gates verified

## What Gets Built

**Enhanced Trait**: `LoadingOptions`
- New optional method: `env_prefix() -> &'static str` (default: "APP")
- New optional method: `env_separator() -> &'static str` (default: "__")
- Modify existing `with_env_vars()` to use these methods
- Default implementations ensure backward compatibility

**Example Usage**:

### PHASE2.1: Test Suite [TDD RED] sl-dtc

### PHASE2.2: Trait Enhancement [TDD GREEN] sl-dp8

Add to LoadingOptions trait:

### PHASE2.3: SettingsLoader Integration [TDD GREEN] sl-xkr

**File**: `src/settings_loader.rs` and `src/layer.rs`

**Blocked by**: sl-dp8

**Modify LayerBuilder.build()**:

When constructing EnvVars layer, use `Self::Options::env_prefix()` and `Self::Options::env_separator()` instead of hardcoded values.

**Current code**:
```rust

    config::Environment::default()
        .prefix(&prefix)
        .separator(&separator)
        .try_parsing(true)

```

**However**, LayerBuilder doesn't have access to Options type. Two approaches:

**Option A**: Modify LayerBuilder API to accept prefix/separator in `with_env_vars()` call (already does this - tests pass)
- Tests already work as-is
- Apps can override prefix/separator by calling with custom values
- Matches current implementation

**Option B**: Store Options ref in LayerBuilder (more complex, deferred to Phase 3 if needed)

**Recommendation**: Verify tests 1-12 pass with Option A approach. If tests expect LayerBuilder to automatically use trait methods, reconsider design.

**Acceptance**: ✅ COMPLETE

## Design Decisions

### Static Methods vs Instance Methods

**Decision**: Use static methods (`fn env_prefix() -> &'static str`)

**Rationale**:
- Environment variable naming is application-wide, not per-instance
- Matches Rust conventions for configuration like `APP_NAME`, `ORG_NAME`
- No allocations needed
- Simpler implementation

### Default Implementations

**Decision**: All new trait methods have default implementations

**Rationale**:
- Zero breaking changes
- Existing LoadingOptions implementors work unchanged
- Apps opt-in by overriding if desired

### Naming Convention

**Decision**: `env_prefix()` and `env_separator()`

**Rationale**:
- Clear what they do
- Matches Phase 2 scope
- Extensible for future env var customizations

### Tests 1-2: Default Values
Verify defaults work without any overrides.

### Tests 3-5: Custom Values
Verify trait overrides work correctly.

### Tests 6-7: LayerBuilder Integration
Verify LayerBuilder respects custom conventions.

Demonstrate TURTLE__* naming convention.

### Test 9: Full Cycle
Load actual environment variables with custom convention.

### Tests 10-11: Backward Compatibility
Verify existing code unchanged.

### Test 12: Multiple Implementations
Verify different LoadingOptions can coexist with different conventions.

## Implementation Notes

1. **No breaking changes**: All new methods have defaults
2. **Static not instance**: Env var naming is application-wide
3. **No new dependencies**: Phase 2 uses only existing crates
4. **Backward compatible**: Apps not implementing new methods work unchanged
5. **TDD discipline**: Write tests first, implement to make them pass
