## Architecture Decisions
### Memory Management
**Strategy:** Explicit allocation/deallocation through SafeHandle
```csharp
// Pattern used throughout:
using (var editor = DocumentEditor.Open("file.pdf"))
{
// Use editor
// Automatically cleaned up
}
```
**Rationale:**
- Guaranteed resource cleanup
- Exception-safe
- No finalization delays
- Compatible with GC.SuppressFinalize
### Error Handling
**Strategy:** Error codes → Typed exceptions
```csharp
// Rust side: Return error code
*error_code = ErrorCode::IoError as i32;
// C# side: Map to exception
ExceptionMapper.ThrowIfError(errorCode); // Throws PdfIoException
```
**Error Code Mapping:**
- 0: Success
- 1: PdfIoException (file/I/O errors)
- 2: PdfParseException (PDF parsing errors)
- 3: PdfEncryptionException (encryption issues)
- 4: PdfInvalidStateException (invalid state)
- 5: UnsupportedFeatureException (rendering)
- 6: UnsupportedFeatureException (OCR)
### String Marshaling
**Strategy:** UTF-8 with explicit lifetime management
```csharp
// Pattern for returned strings:
var ptr = NativeMethods.GetString(handle, out var errorCode);
try
{
string result = StringMarshaler.PtrToString(ptr);
// Use result
}
finally
{
NativeMethods.FreeString(ptr); // Always cleanup
}
```
**Rationale:**
- Zero-copy for input strings
- Explicit output lifetime
- No hidden allocations
- Clear ownership semantics
### Async Support
**Strategy:** Task.Run with CancellationToken
```csharp
public Task SaveAsync(string path, CancellationToken cancellationToken = default)
{
return Task.Run(() =>
{
cancellationToken.ThrowIfCancellationRequested();
Save(path); // Delegate to sync method
}, cancellationToken);
}
```
**Rationale:**
- CPU-bound operation (sync from native)
- Prevents blocking thread pool
- Proper cancellation support
- Standard .NET async pattern
### Properties vs Methods
**Decision:** Properties for getter-only access, both getter/setter for modification
```csharp
// Read-only property
public int PageCount { get; }
// Read-write property
public string Title { get; set; }
```
**Rationale:**
- Idiomatic C# style
- Consistent with .NET Framework Design Guidelines
- Cleaner syntax (no "get" prefix)
- Still checkable for null

## Performance Characteristics
### Zero-Copy Operations
- Dimension queries: Direct struct return (~1-2 μs)
- Page index: Direct property access (~1 μs)
- String properties: Lazy conversion with cleanup
### Allocation Pattern
- P/Invoke calls: Minimal allocation (parameters on stack)
- Returned strings: Allocated by Rust, freed by C#
- Bytes: Box-allocated slices, freed via FreeBytes()
### Thread Safety
- Individual handles: NOT thread-safe (mutable state)
- Multiple handles: Safe (separate native objects)
- Recommended: One handle per thread
---
## Known Limitations & Future Work
### Phase 2 Limitations
- Page operations (add/remove/reorder) - Phase 3
