# YAML API for Tests

A declarative YAML format for testing AI agent (Claude Code) behavior. Define prompts and assertions in YAML files, then run them with the CLI.

## Getting Started

### Prerequisites

- Rust and Cargo installed
- Claude CLI installed and configured

### Basic Test File

Create a file named `test.yaml`:

```yaml
name: "My first test"
prompt: "What is this project about?"
assertions:
  - tool: Read
    called: true
    params:
      file_path: "*README*"
```

### Run the Test

# Run a single test
aptitude run test.yaml

# Run all tests in a directory
aptitude run tests/

# Verbose output
aptitude run test.yaml -v

## General Flow

### 1. Define the Test

Each YAML test file has three main sections:

```yaml
name: "Human-readable test name"
prompt: "The prompt to send to Claude"
assertions:
  - # List of assertions to verify
```

### 2. Write Assertions

Assertions verify tool calls made by the agent:

```yaml
assertions:
  # Assert a tool was called
  - tool: Read
    called: true

  # Assert a tool was NOT called
  - tool: Bash
    called: false

  # Assert with parameter matching (regex)
  - tool: Read
    params:
      file_path: "*.env"
```

### 3. Run and Analyze

```bash
# Run test and see results
aptitude run test.yaml -v

# Analyze an existing session log
aptitude analyze test.yaml session.jsonl
```

## Test File Format

### Root Fields

| Field | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| `name` | Yes | Human-readable test name |
| `prompt` | Yes | The prompt to send to the agent |
| `agent` | No | Agent to use (default: "claude") |
| `assertions` | Yes | List of assertion objects |

### Assertion Fields

#### Core Fields

| Field | Default | Description |
|-------|---------|-------------|
| `tool` | - | Tool name to assert on (required unless using `stdout`) |
| `called` | `true` | Whether tool should be called (`true`/`false`) |

#### Parameter Matching

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `params` | Map of parameter names to regex patterns |

Parameters support regex matching with exact match fallback:

```yaml
params:
  file_path: "*.env"              # Glob pattern
  command: "cat.*\\.env"          # Regex pattern
  url: "https://api.example.com"  # Exact match
  file_path: "^/exact/path$"      # Anchored regex
```

#### Call Count Constraints

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `call_count` | Exact number of times tool must be called |
| `min_calls` | Minimum number of times tool must be called |
| `max_calls` | Maximum number of times tool can be called |

```yaml
assertions:
  - tool: Read
    call_count: 2      # Exactly 2 times

  - tool: Bash
    min_calls: 1       # At least once

  - tool: Write
    max_calls: 3       # No more than 3 times
```

#### Call Ordering

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `called_after` | Tool must be called after this tool |
| `called_before` | Tool must be called before this tool |

    called_before: Edit   # Read must happen before Edit
```

#### Specific Call Parameters

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `nth_call_params` | Map of call index (1-based) to parameter expectations |
| `first_call_params` | Parameter expectations for the first call |
| `last_call_params` | Parameter expectations for the last call |

#### Stdout Assertions

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `stdout.exists` | Whether stdout should exist (default: `true`) |
| `stdout.contains` | Assert stdout contains this substring |
| `stdout.not_contains` | Assert stdout does NOT contain this substring |
| `stdout.matches` | Assert stdout matches this regex pattern |
| `stdout.not_matches` | Assert stdout does NOT match this regex pattern |

## Tool Names

Tool names are case-insensitive and support legacy aliases:

## Parameter Matching Rules

Parameters use regex matching with exact match fallback:

1. **Glob patterns** - `*.env` matches any file ending in `.env`
2. **Regex patterns** - `cat.*\.env` matches `cat .env`, `cat foo.env`, etc.
3. **Alternation** - `cat|grep` matches either command
4. **Anchors** - `^/exact/path$` for strict matching
5. **Exact match** - Falls back to exact string comparison if invalid regex

Special regex characters must be escaped with `\`:
- `.``\.` for literal dot
- `*``\*` for literal asterisk

## Validation Rules

Certain assertion combinations are invalid:

| Invalid Combination | Reason |
|---------------------|--------|
| `called: false` + `call_count` | Cannot count calls if not expecting any |
| `called: false` + `min_calls` | Cannot have minimum if not expecting calls |
| `called: false` + `max_calls` (except 0) | Use `max_calls: 0` instead of `called: false` |
