# Fluent API for Rust Tests

A Jest-like fluent API for testing AI agent (Claude Code) behavior. Write assertions on tool calls to verify Claude follows steering guides and behaves as expected.

## Getting Started

### Prerequisites

- Rust and Cargo installed
- Claude CLI installed and configured

### Add Dependency

## General Flow

### 1. Execute a Prompt

Use `prompt()` to create a builder, configure it, then execute:

// Simple execution - returns Vec<ToolCall>
let tool_calls = prompt("Your prompt here")

// Full execution - returns ExecutionOutput (includes stdout)
let output = prompt("Your prompt here")

    .run_full()

```

### 2. Create Expectations

Use `expect()` or `expect_tools()` to start building assertions:

// From tool calls only
expect(&tool_calls)

// From full output (can also assert on stdout)

    .tool(Tool::Read)
    .to_be_called();

### 3. Chain Assertions

Build up constraints with method chaining:

### 4. Panicking vs Non-Panicking

**Panicking methods** (use in tests):

expect(&tool_calls).tool(Tool::Read).to_be_called();     // panics on failure
expect(&tool_calls).tool(Tool::Bash).not_to_be_called(); // panics on failure
```

**Non-panicking methods** (use for custom handling):
```rust
let result = expect(&tool_calls).tool(Tool::Read).evaluate();
if !result.passed {
    println!("Failed: {}", result.reason.unwrap());
}
```

### ToolAssertion

**Builder Methods (chainable):**

|--------|-------------|
| `.with_params(params)` | Set parameter expectations (supports regex patterns) |
| `.times(n: usize)` | Assert tool called exactly N times |
| `.at_least(n: usize)` | Assert tool called at least N times |
| `.at_most(n: usize)` | Assert tool called at most N times |
| `.after(tool: Tool)` | Assert this tool was called after another tool |
| `.before(tool: Tool)` | Assert this tool was called before another tool |

**Assertion Methods (panicking):**

| Method | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `.to_be_called()` | Assert tool was called (panics on failure) |
| `.not_to_be_called()` | Assert tool was NOT called (panics on failure) |

**Non-Panicking Evaluation:**

| Method | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `.evaluate()` | Return `AssertionResult` (expects tool called) |
| `.evaluate_not_called()` | Return `AssertionResult` (expects tool not called) |

**Specific Call Access:**

| `.nth_call(n: usize)` | Get the nth call (1-indexed) for specific assertions |
| `.last_call()` | Get the last call for specific assertions |

### NthCallAssertion

| Method | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `.has_params(params)` | Assert this specific call has given parameters (panics) |
| `.evaluate_params(params)` | Non-panicking param check, returns `AssertionResult` |
| `.params()` | Get actual parameters of the call as `&serde_json::Value` |
| `.index()` | Get the call index (1-indexed) |

### StdoutAssertion

**Builder Methods (chainable):**

|--------|-------------|
| `.contains(s: &str)` | Assert stdout contains substring |
| `.not_contains(s: &str)` | Assert stdout does NOT contain substring |
| `.matches(pattern: &str)` | Assert stdout matches regex pattern |
| `.not_matches(pattern: &str)` | Assert stdout does NOT match regex pattern |

**Assertion Methods:**

| Method | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `.to_exist()` | Assert stdout exists and matches all constraints (panics) |
| `.to_be_empty()` | Assert stdout is empty/None (panics) |
| `.evaluate()` | Non-panicking, returns `AssertionResult` |
| `.evaluate_empty()` | Non-panicking empty check, returns `AssertionResult` |

### Tool Enum

Type-safe tool names matching Claude Code's JSONL output:

| `Tool::Bash` | Execute a bash command |
| `Tool::Glob` | Search for files using glob patterns |

| `Tool::Task` | Launch a subagent task |
| `Tool::WebFetch` | Fetch content from a URL |
| `Tool::WebSearch` | Search the web |
| `Tool::NotebookEdit` | Edit a Jupyter notebook cell |
| `Tool::AskUserQuestion` | Ask the user a question |

### Helpers

**`params!` macro** - Convenience macro for creating parameter maps:

Parameter values support regex patterns. The matcher tries regex first, then falls back to exact match.

### AssertionResult

Returned by non-panicking `evaluate*` methods:

| `.passed` | `bool` - Whether the assertion passed |
| `.description` | `String` - What was asserted |
| `.reason` | `Option<String>` - Failure reason if failed |
