The confirmed result of a Batch::register_files push: count contiguous indices starting at base_index.

base_index is currently always zero, because a ring accepts at most one registration that assigns an index – do not read its presence as evidence that several registrations compose. It is kept rather than folded away because it is the correct shape if that rule is ever relaxed (M10.3, D-31).
