OutputItem

Enum OutputItem

Source
pub enum OutputItem {
    Message(MessageItem),
    Reasoning(ReasoningItem),
    FunctionCall(FunctionCallItem),
    FunctionCallOutput(FunctionCallOutputItem),
    Custom(CustomItem),
}
Expand description

Output items generated by the model.

Per the Open Responses specification, items are polymorphic (discriminated by type), state machines (with status transitions), and streamable (through delta events).

Custom items serialize with their custom_type as the actual type field value (e.g., "type": "vtcode:file_change"), per the extension convention.

Variants§

§

Message(MessageItem)

A message from the assistant, user, system, or developer.

§

Reasoning(ReasoningItem)

Model reasoning/thinking content.

§

FunctionCall(FunctionCallItem)

A function/tool call request from the model.

§

FunctionCallOutput(FunctionCallOutputItem)

Output from a function/tool call execution.

§

Custom(CustomItem)

Custom/extension item type (prefixed with implementor slug).

Implementations§

Source§

impl OutputItem

Source

pub fn status(&self) -> ItemStatus

Returns the current status of this item.

Source

pub fn message( id: impl Into<OutputItemId>, role: MessageRole, content: Vec<ContentPart>, ) -> Self

Creates a new message item with the given parameters (status: InProgress).

Source

pub fn function_call( id: impl Into<OutputItemId>, name: impl Into<String>, arguments: Value, ) -> Self

Creates a new function call item.

Source

pub fn function_call_output( id: impl Into<OutputItemId>, call_id: Option<String>, output: impl Into<String>, ) -> Self

Creates a new function call output item (status: InProgress).

Use this for streaming scenarios. For completed tool results, use OutputItem::completed_function_call_output.

Source

pub fn completed_function_call_output( id: impl Into<OutputItemId>, call_id: Option<String>, output: impl Into<String>, ) -> Self

Creates a new completed function call output item.

Use this when the tool execution has finished and the output is final.
