Which phase ran out of time, and how long it was given.

Exists so a caller can describe the failure without asking the filesystem again. hash_file used to format its message by calling std::fs::metadata unbounded on the very path that had just timed out - on a stale mount that is the call that blocks forever, so the error handler hung in exactly the scenario the timeout was protecting against.

Variants

Stat(Duration)

The stat never returned: the path is unreachable, not merely slow.

Read(Duration)

stat succeeded and the work itself overran its size-scaled budget.
