Each variant represents a lifecycle point where hooks can observe or control agent behavior.

Variants

PreToolUse

Before a tool is executed. Can modify input or block execution.

PostToolUse

After successful tool execution. Can observe results.

PostToolUseFailure

When tool execution fails.

Notification

System notification (info, warning, error).

UserPromptSubmit

When the user submits a prompt.

SessionStart

When a session begins.

SessionEnd

When a session ends.

Stop

Agent stop event.

SubagentStart

Before a subagent starts.

SubagentStop

After a subagent stops.

PreCompact

Before conversation compaction.

PermissionRequest

When a permission decision is requested.

Setup

Initial setup event.

TeammateIdle

Teammate idle notification.

TaskCompleted

Task completion event.
