Variants

None

Plain TCP. Everything, the password included, is on the wire in the clear — see LdapConfig::allow_plaintext_password for the one way to send a bind over it.

StartTls

Connect in the clear, then upgrade with the StartTLS extended operation. The default for port 389.

Ldaps

TLS from the first byte. The default for port 636.
