One commit index’s retained read lease.

generation identifies the set of live views sharing this entry. It changes whenever the entry is re-created after being emptied or expired, so a stale ReadView that drops after GC expired its lease cannot decrement a newer, unrelated pin that happens to sit at the same commit index.
