Variants

Clean

Expected location is empty — nothing left behind.

Active

Artifact exists and belongs to a live daemon.

Present

Artifact exists and is expected to persist across daemon runs (databases, service definitions, armed reserve, shadow copies).

Stale

Artifact exists but its owner is gone (dead pid, refused socket, WAL left by an unclean shutdown, truncated reserve).

Orphaned

Unexpected file in a managed location.

Error

The location could not be inspected.
