The intermediate text a compilation went through, kept when -save-temps asked for it.

Both are None on a compilation that was not asked to keep anything, and the assembly is None on one that stopped before there was any. Holding the text rather than writing it is what keeps this function free of the file system, which is what lets it be tested against a map from path to bytes.

Phase 4’s output, the same text -E would have printed.

assembly: Option<String>

The assembly the back end produced on the way to the object file.
