Text
Plain-text tier: documentation, config and templates.
Trigram-indexed only — no tree-sitter grammar, no symbol extraction, no import extraction. Added because agents do not partition searches by file type: a config key lives in the YAML, the Rust struct AND the spec paragraph, and Reflex used to return the struct and a confident 0 for the rest.
Serialises as "text" (the enum is rename_all = "lowercase").
Lock
Lock files (Cargo.lock, package-lock.json, *.lock, …).
Indexed since 2.0.0 in [index] mode = "tracked", but excluded from every
search by default: 100k lines of pinned versions are noise for almost every
query and the one real question (“which lockfile pins serde 1.0.190?”) is
asked with include_locks: true or lang: "lock".
Generated
Generated files judged by name: *.pb.go, *_generated.*, *.generated.*,
*.min.js, *.min.css, *.map. Indexed, excluded by default,
include_generated: true or lang: "generated" to widen.
Unknown
Never produced by Language::from_path since 2.0.0 (every path classifies
as code, Text, Lock or Generated); kept as the miss value of
Language::from_extension and as the forward-compatible sentinel for
readers of the language field.
Implementations§
Source§impl Language
impl Language
Sourcepub fn from_path(path: &Path) -> Self
pub fn from_path(path: &Path) -> Self
Classify a file by its path.
This is the one classifier the indexer, watcher and query engine share, so a file is either indexed, watched and searchable, or none of the three. Path only: whether the file is binary is decided from its bytes by the indexer, and a binary file is simply never in the index.
- A lock file name wins (
Cargo.lock,package-lock.json) →Lock. - A generated name wins next (
x.pb.go,app.min.js) →Generated. - A recognised code extension → that language (
main.rs,app.mjs). - Everything else →
Text:README,OWNERS,foo.po,a.css,Makefile,.githooks/pre-commit. Whether such a file is INDEXED is the[index] modepolicy’s decision (PathPolicy::classify).
pub fn from_extension(ext: &str) -> Self
Sourcepub fn from_name(name: &str) -> Option<Self>
pub fn from_name(name: &str) -> Option<Self>
Parse a language from a human-friendly name (CLI/API input)
Accepts lowercase names and common aliases. Returns None for unrecognized names.
Sourcepub fn supported_names_help() -> &'static str
pub fn supported_names_help() -> &'static str
Human-readable list of all supported language names (for error messages)
Sourcepub fn is_supported(&self) -> bool
pub fn is_supported(&self) -> bool
Check if this language has a parser implementation
Returns true only for languages with working Tree-sitter parsers. This determines which files will be indexed by Reflex.
Sourcepub fn is_excluded_by_default(&self) -> bool
pub fn is_excluded_by_default(&self) -> bool
Whether files of this language are indexed but left out of every search
unless asked for (include_locks / include_generated, or lang).
Sourcepub fn is_code(&self) -> bool
pub fn is_code(&self) -> bool
Whether this is a code language, supported or not (Swift is code without a working grammar). Code files are assumed to be text; every other file is sniffed for a NUL byte before it is indexed.
Sourcepub fn is_indexable(&self) -> bool
pub fn is_indexable(&self) -> bool
Whether files of this language can be in the index at all.
Distinct from Self::is_supported, which means “has a tree-sitter parser”.
The text tier is indexed but never parsed, so symbol search, AST queries and
dependency analysis skip it while full-text search covers it. Whether a given
path IS indexed also depends on [index] mode (PathPolicy::classify).
