A session whose cwd lies under a reporting VS Code window that has ≥1 Claude tab/terminal is tagged VsCode; everything else is Terminal — meaning “not matched to a reporting VS Code window” (a bare terminal session, or a VS Code session whose companion is not installed). Serialized as {"kind":"terminal"} / {"kind":"vs_code","window_key":"…"}.
