Where the worker learns how much of the WAL is durable.

SharedDb is the real one. The trait exists so the worker does not care how the handle is held.

Absorb whatever another process committed or snapshotted. Called, on a blocking thread, only when the files on disk differ from the position and no snapshot is in progress.
