Model roles determine which AI model handles which type of work.
Each role maps to different cost/capability trade-offs:
- Thinking: expensive but strongest reasoning
- Coding: optimized for code generation
- Task: cheap and fast for simple operations
- Embedding: vector embeddings (usually local/free)
- Auditor: security review (usually local/free)
Variants§
Thinking
Deep thinking, analysis, decision-making — uses the strongest model.
Coding
Code generation, refactoring, fixing — uses a code-optimized model.
Task
General tasks (search, classification, summarization) — cheap and fast.
Embedding
Vector embeddings for semantic search — typically local/free.
Auditor
Security auditing via a secondary model — typically local/free.
