Invariants:
- Length is in
1..=MAX_METADATA_LEN. Empty metadata is rejected — useOption::<Metadata>::Noneto represent “absent.” This avoids thebytes::Bytes::slice(empty)footgun where an empty slice orphans from the parent buffer’sSTATIC_VTABLE(the footgun is documented oncrate::envelope::PersistedEnvelope::metadata_bytes). - The non-empty invariant is wire-format-driven:
u32::MAXis the absent-metadata sentinel in the wire encoding, soSome(Metadata)on the read path always carries actual bytes.
