A fetch that sends TOKEN_VARIABLE’s value from env to the attestations API, or, when env sets RELEASE_DIR_VARIABLE, one that reads the release from that directory. An empty value is unset.

Return the verified bytes. dest is a private temporary file for legacy implementations of Self::fetch; production fetches return their verified in-memory download without reading it back from disk.
