Which variant applies follows from the medium’s namespace: a git / path+commit medium pins a Commit; a graph / entity medium pins a Snapshot token; a web / url medium pins an Etag. A plain path medium (mtime change signal, no retrievable version) records absent — represented as None on Anchor::at_version, never a variant here.
