Compute the integrity checksum of the referenced checkpoint.

Only single-file checkpoints carry a stable digest: a persistent shard checkpoint is a directory whose contents (forward_chunks/, reverse_chunks/, index.wal) are rewritten in place while the generation is active, so a manifest-stored digest would go stale between stores. Directory corruption is instead detected at read time by the per-chunk CRC32 embedded in every chunk file (see serialize.rs).
