The four storage tiers, ordered from hottest (fastest/most expensive) to coldest (slowest/cheapest).

Variants

Hot

Frequently accessed — in-memory or NVMe SSD.

Warm

Infrequently accessed — spinning disk or slow SSD.

Cold

Archival — compressed, slow access acceptable.

Frozen

Immutable archive — write-once, never re-migrated automatically.
