Open(OpenError)

The envelope did not open. Blocks before the failing one may already have been written: a caller that must not show unverified output keeps it until this returns Ok, or reports the failure after it (git’s filter protocol has status=error after content for exactly this).

Io(Error)

Reading the envelope or writing the plaintext failed.
