What a commit retired (M1): the handles its document no longer cites and the chunk objects its pointer no longer references. One immutable log object per commit, under retired/, keyed by the unix second it was written — the retirement’s clock. The sweeps spare everything a log younger than retire_grace_secs names; a writer reaps the older ones (untracked.rs).
