The availability pre-check (dig.getAvailability, L7 spec §9) — asked BEFORE any range fetch. A multi-source download batches candidate peers × items in one call each and only fans byte-range requests at peers that answer available — never opening range streams to peers that may not hold the content. A message-style control call over the mux’d mTLS connection.
