# YM2149 Streaming Audio Playback
## Overview
The YM2149-RS emulator now supports **real-time streaming audio playback** with minimal memory consumption. Instead of generating all audio upfront and storing it in memory, the system uses a ring buffer to allow concurrent sample generation and playback.
## Architecture
### Ring Buffer (Mutex-Based with Atomic Position Tracking)
The core of the streaming system is a **ring buffer** that enables:
- **Concurrent access**: Producer thread (sample generator) writes while consumer thread (playback) reads
- **Fixed memory usage**: Buffer size is configured upfront, memory doesn't grow with duration
- **Efficient wrap-around**: Uses bit masking for O(1) modulo operations

### Memory Efficiency
Instead of:

## Thread Safety
The streaming system is designed for **single producer, single consumer** (SPSC) pattern:

### Synchronization
- **Atomic operations**: Position counters use `AtomicUsize` with `Ordering::Release`/`Ordering::Acquire` for memory visibility
- **Parking Lot Mutex**: Protects buffer access - necessary for safe concurrent read/write
- **Position tracking**: Read/write positions tracked with atomics to minimize lock contention
- **Note**: Not "lock-free" - buffer access is serialized by mutex, but position tracking is atomic

### Understanding Underruns
An **underrun** occurs when the playback thread tries to read samples but the buffer is empty. This happens when:
- Sample generation is too slow
- Ring buffer is too small for the sample generation rate
**How to avoid**:
1. Use `StreamConfig::stable()` for larger buffer
2. Ensure sample generation batch size matches buffer headroom
3. Monitor `fill_percentage` - keep it above 20-30%
## Advanced Features
### Backpressure Handling
The streaming system implements **backpressure** - if the ring buffer fills up, `write_blocking()` will wait briefly and retry:

## Troubleshooting
