## Test Video File Setup

To run E2E decoder tests once FFI is implemented:

```bash
mkdir -p tests/data
# H.264 test video
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i testsrc=s=1920x1080:d=2 \
       -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:v libx264 -preset fast \
       tests/data/test_h264.mp4
# AV1 test video
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i testsrc=s=1920x1080:d=2 \
       -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:v libaom-av1 \
       tests/data/test_av1.webm
# VP9 test video
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i testsrc=s=1920x1080:d=2 \
       -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:v libvpx-vp9 \
       tests/data/test_vp9.webm
```

Run tests with:
```bash
cargo test --test e2e_playback -- --nocapture --ignored
```

## Next Steps (Implementation Priority)

### 1. VideoToolbox FFI (1-2 Days) 🔴 CRITICAL
Get H.264 playback working on macOS

**Required FFI Calls**:
```
- CMVideoFormatDescriptionCreateFromH264ParameterSets()
- VTDecompressionSessionCreate()
- VTDecompressionSessionDecodeFrame()
- CVPixelBufferLockBaseAddress()
- CVPixelBufferGetBaseAddressOfPlane()
- CVPixelBufferGetBytesPerRowOfPlane()
```

**Implementation Path**:
1. Create objc2 bindings for VideoToolbox
2. Implement format description creation from avcC
3. Implement VTDecompressionSession callback
4. Implement CVPixelBuffer → Frame conversion
5. Test with generated H.264 file

**Success Criteria**:
- `h264_file_decodes_and_produces_frames` test passes
- Real H.264 video plays through pipeline
- All 158 tests still pass

### 2. AV1 Decoder (1-2 Days) 🟡 HIGH
Enable royalty-free playback

**Options**:
- Option A: Fix dav1d on Apple Silicon
- Option B: Use rav1d (pure Rust, slower)

**Implementation Path**:
1. Add dav1d-rs or rav1d dependency
2. Implement FFI packet feeding
3. Implement frame extraction
4. Generate AV1 test file
5. Validate in E2E test

### 3. VP9 Decoder (1 Day) 🟡 HIGH
Compatibility format fallback

**Implementation Path**:
1. Add vpx-sys dependency
2. Implement libvpx FFI calls
3. Implement frame extraction
4. Generate VP9 test file
5. Validate in E2E test

### 4. GPU Rendering Integration (2-3 Days) 🟠 MEDIUM
Display decoded frames on screen

**Blocker**: None (infrastructure exists)

**Path**:
1. Integrate Renderer into Compositor
2. Implement layer composition
3. Test with VideoToolbox decoded frames

### 5. Full E2E Validation (1 Day) 🟢 LOW
Real video file → output

**Path**:
1. Run all E2E tests with real video files
2. Validate frame appearance
3. Benchmark playback
4. Document performance

## What's Ready Now

3. **Trait-Based System**: Pluggable decoders, easily extensible
4. **Feature Gating**: Each decoder independently compilable
5. **FFI Documentation**: Clear comments for each FFI call needed
6. **Test Framework**: Ready to validate once FFI is complete

## Session Summary

Phase 2 went from empty decoders to a complete, documented, tested infrastructure ready for FFI implementation. The architecture is solid, licensing is clean, and the path forward is clear.

**Next session**: Implement VideoToolbox FFI calls to get real H.264 decoding working. This is the critical path to end-to-end video playback on macOS.
