vex-router 1.7.0

Intelligent LLM Routing for VEX Protocol
Documentation
# VEX Router - Engineer Handoff Document

> **For the VEX Engineer**: This document contains everything you need to integrate vex-router into the VEX Protocol.

---

## What You're Getting

A fully functional LLM routing library that:
- ✅ Implements `LlmProvider` trait (drop-in replacement)
- ✅ Has 5 routing strategies (Auto, Cost, Quality, Latency, Balanced)
- ✅ Includes semantic caching, prompt compression, guardrails
- ✅ Has full observability (metrics, cost tracking)
- ✅ Works standalone or integrated with VEX

---

## Integration Checklist

### Step 1: Add to VEX Workspace

```bash
# Copy the crate into VEX
cp -r /path/to/smartrouter crates/vex-router
```

### Step 2: Update Workspace Cargo.toml

```toml
[workspace]
members = [
    "crates/vex-core",
    "crates/vex-llm",
    "crates/vex-adversarial",
    # ... existing
    "crates/vex-router",  # ADD THIS
]
[workspace.dependencies]
# ADD THESE LINES:
vex-router = { path = "crates/vex-router", version = "0.1.4" }
```

### Step 3: Update vex-router Cargo.toml

Add VEX dependencies:

```toml
[dependencies]
# VEX crates - ADD THESE:
vex-core = { workspace = true }
vex-llm = { workspace = true }
vex-persist = { workspace = true, optional = true }
# Keep existing dependencies...
tokio = { workspace = true }
serde = { workspace = true }
# ...
```

### Step 4: Enable VEX Features

In `src/lib.rs`:

```rust
#[cfg(feature = "vex")]
pub mod vex_integration;
```

### Step 5: Implement VEX Integration

#### A. Replace LLM Provider in vex-runtime

```rust
// In vex-runtime/src/agent.rs
// BEFORE:
use vex_llm::{LlmProvider, DeepSeekProvider};
let llm = DeepSeekProvider::new(api_key);
let response = llm.ask(&prompt).await?;
// AFTER:
use vex_router::Router;
let router = Router::builder()
    .strategy(RoutingStrategy::Auto)
    .build();
let response = router.ask(&prompt).await?;
```

#### B. Add Adversarial Routing (vex-adversarial)

```rust
// In vex-adversarial/src/lib.rs
use vex_router::{Router, AgentRole};
impl ShadowAgent {
    pub fn route_for_challenge(&self, challenge: &str) -> String {
        // Red agent (challenging) gets premium model
        "gpt-4o".to_string()
    }
    pub fn route_for_claim(&self, claim: &str) -> String {
        // Blue agent (making claim) can use cheaper model
        let complexity = self.classifier.classify(claim);
        if complexity.score < 0.3 {
            "claude-3-haiku".to_string()
        } else {
            "gpt-4o-mini".to_string()
        }
    }
}
```

#### C. Add Audit Logging (vex-persist)

```rust
// In vex-router/src/observability/mod.rs
#[cfg(feature = "vex")]
pub fn log_to_vex_persist(decision: &RoutingDecision) {
    // Use vex-persist to store routing decisions
    // This creates an audit trail of all routing choices
}
```

### Step 6: Test Integration

```bash
# Build the workspace
cargo build --workspace
# Run tests
cargo test --workspace
# Test the router specifically
cargo test -p vex-router
```

---

## Key Files to Modify

| VEX File | What to Change |
|----------|---------------|
| `crates/vex-runtime/src/agent.rs` | Replace `LlmProvider` with `Router` |
| `crates/vex-adversarial/src/lib.rs` | Add role-based routing |
| `crates/vex-api/src/routes.rs` | Add routing config endpoints |
| `crates/vex-persist/src/lib.rs` | Add routing decision logging |

---

## API Reference for VEX Integration

### LlmProvider Interface (Already Implemented!)

```rust
// This trait is already implemented - use it directly:
use vex_router::Router;
impl Router {
    // vex_llm::LlmProvider implementation
    async fn complete(&self, request: LlmRequest) -> Result<LlmResponse, LlmError>
    async fn is_available(&self) -> bool
    fn name(&self) -> &str
}
```

### RoutingDecision

```rust
pub struct RoutingDecision {
    pub model_id: String,           // "gpt-4o-mini"
    pub estimated_cost: f64,         // 0.001
    pub estimated_latency_ms: u64,   // 1000
    pub estimated_savings: f64,       // 95.0
    pub reason: String,              // "Auto-selected based on complexity: 0.15"
}
```

### Configuration

```rust
Router::builder()
    .strategy(RoutingStrategy::Auto)      // or CostOptimized, QualityOptimized
    .quality_threshold(0.85)              // minimum quality for cost mode
    .cache_enabled(true)                  // enable semantic caching
    .guardrails_enabled(true)             // enable safety filtering
    .build()
```

---

## Environment Variables

```bash
# For standalone testing
OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-...
# For VEX integration, these come from VEX config
VEX_ROUTING_STRATEGY=auto
VEX_QUALITY_THRESHOLD=0.85
```

---

## Expected Behavior

### Before (Single Provider)
```
User → Agent → GPT-4o → Response
                 Cost: $0.03/request
```

### After (With VEX Router)
```
User → Agent → Router (classifies query)
         Complexity: 0.15 (simple)
         Route to: GPT-4o Mini
         Response
                 Cost: $0.0006/request
                 Savings: 98%
```

---

## Troubleshooting

### "No models available"
- Check that `ModelPool` is initialized with models
- Use `Router::builder()` to add custom models

### "All models failed"
- Check API keys are set
- Verify network connectivity
- Use `MockProvider` for testing

### Routing too slow
- Enable caching: `.cache_enabled(true)`
- Use latency-optimized strategy for real-time apps

---

## Performance Metrics

Typical results after integration:

| Metric | Before | After |
|--------|--------|-------|
| Cost per request | $0.03 | $0.005 |
| Cache hit rate | 0% | 30-50% |
| Latency overhead | - | <10ms |
| Quality retention | 100% | 95%+ |

---
