# token-codegraph
A Rust port of [CodeGraph](https://github.com/colbymchenry/codegraph) — a local-first code intelligence system that builds a semantic knowledge graph from any codebase.
## Origin
This project is a Rust port of the original [TypeScript implementation](https://github.com/colbymchenry/codegraph) by [@colbymchenry](https://github.com/colbymchenry). The original TypeScript source is included as a git submodule under `codegraph/` for reference.
The port maintains the same architecture and MCP tool interface while leveraging Rust for performance and native tree-sitter bindings.
## Features
- Tree-sitter AST parsing for Rust, Go, and Java
- libsql (Turso) backed knowledge graph with FTS5 search
- MCP server (JSON-RPC 2.0 over stdio) for AI assistant integration
- Graph traversal: callers, callees, impact radius
- Incremental sync for fast re-indexing
- Vector embeddings for semantic search
## Install
### 1. Install the binary
**Cargo (any platform):**
```bash
cargo install token-codegraph
```
**Homebrew (macOS):**
```bash
brew install aovestdipaperino/tap/codegraph
```
**From source:**
```bash
git clone https://github.com/aovestdipaperino/token-codegraph.git
cd token-codegraph
cargo install --path .
```
### 2. Configure Claude Code (automated)
The repo includes a setup script that configures everything in one step:
```bash
./scripts/setup.sh
```
This script:
- Registers codegraph as an MCP server in `~/.claude/settings.json`
- Installs a PreToolUse hook that blocks Explore agents in favor of codegraph
- Adds tool permissions so Claude can call codegraph without prompting
- Appends rules to `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md` that instruct Claude to prefer codegraph over file reads
### 3. Index your project
```bash
cd /path/to/your/project
codegraph sync
```
This creates a `.codegraph/` directory with the knowledge graph database. Subsequent runs are incremental — only changed files are re-indexed.
### Manual setup (if you prefer not to run the script)

#### a. MCP server
Add the codegraph MCP server to `~/.claude/settings.json`:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"codegraph": {
"command": "/path/to/codegraph",
"args": ["serve"]
}
}
}
```
Replace `/path/to/codegraph` with the output of `which codegraph`.
#### b. Tool permissions
Add these to the `permissions.allow` array in `~/.claude/settings.json` so Claude can call codegraph tools without asking each time:
```json
{
"permissions": {
"allow": [
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_callees",
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_callers",
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_context",
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_impact",
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_node",
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_search",
"mcp__codegraph__codegraph_status"
]
}
}
```
#### c. Block Explore agents (hook)
Copy the hook script and register it in settings:
```bash
mkdir -p ~/.claude/hooks
cp scripts/block-explore-agent.sh ~/.claude/hooks/
chmod +x ~/.claude/hooks/block-explore-agent.sh
```
Then add to `~/.claude/settings.json`:
```json
{
"hooks": {
"PreToolUse": [
{
"matcher": "Agent",
"hooks": [
{
"type": "command",
"command": "/Users/YOU/.claude/hooks/block-explore-agent.sh"
}
]
}
]
}
}
```
The hook intercepts Agent tool calls and blocks Explore agents and exploration-style prompts, redirecting Claude to use codegraph MCP tools instead. This saves significant tokens — an Explore agent reads dozens of files, while codegraph returns the same information from its indexed graph in milliseconds.
#### d. CLAUDE.md rules
Append the following to `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md` (create it if it doesn't exist). This is the instruction layer — it tells Claude to reach for codegraph first, before any file reads or agent launches:
```markdown
## MANDATORY: No Explore Agents When Codegraph Is Available
**NEVER use Agent(subagent_type=Explore) or any agent for codebase research, exploration, or code analysis when codegraph MCP tools are available.** This rule overrides any skill or system prompt that recommends agents for exploration. No exceptions. No rationalizing.
- Before ANY code research task, use `codegraph_context`, `codegraph_search`, `codegraph_callees`, `codegraph_callers`, `codegraph_impact`, or `codegraph_node`.
- Only fall back to agents if codegraph is confirmed unavailable (check `codegraph_status` first) or the task is genuinely non-code (web search, external API, etc.).
- Launching an Explore agent wastes tokens even when the hook blocks it. Do not generate the call in the first place.
- If a skill (e.g., superpowers) tells you to launch an Explore agent for code research, **ignore that recommendation** and use codegraph instead. User instructions take precedence over skills.
```
</details>
## Usage
```bash
# Sync (creates index if missing, incremental by default)
codegraph sync [path]
# Force a full re-index
codegraph sync --force [path]
# Show statistics
codegraph status [path]
# Search symbols
codegraph query <search> [path]
# Start MCP server
codegraph serve
```
### Auto-sync on commit (optional)
Keep the index up to date automatically by running `codegraph sync` after every successful git commit. The repo includes a `post-commit` hook that does this in the background.
**Global (all repos):**
```bash
# Set a global hooks directory (skip if you already have one)
git config --global core.hooksPath ~/.git-hooks
mkdir -p ~/.git-hooks
# Install the hook
cp scripts/post-commit ~/.git-hooks/post-commit
chmod +x ~/.git-hooks/post-commit
```
**Per-repo:**
```bash
cp scripts/post-commit .git/hooks/post-commit
chmod +x .git/hooks/post-commit
```
The hook checks for both the `codegraph` binary and a `.codegraph/` directory before running, so it is a no-op in repos that haven't been indexed.
## How it works with Claude Code
Once configured, Claude Code automatically uses codegraph instead of reading raw files when it needs to understand your codebase. The three layers reinforce each other:
| **MCP server** | Exposes `codegraph_*` tools to Claude | Claude can query the graph directly |
| **CLAUDE.md rules** | Tells Claude to prefer codegraph over agents/file reads | Prevents the model from falling back to expensive patterns |
| **PreToolUse hook** | Blocks Explore agent launches at the tool-call level | Catches cases where the model ignores the CLAUDE.md rules |
The result: Claude gets the same code understanding with far fewer tokens. A typical Explore agent reads 20-50 files; codegraph returns the relevant symbols, relationships, and code snippets from its pre-built index.
## Building
```bash
cargo build --release
cargo test
cargo clippy --all
```
