## 1. Context
### 1.1 Motivation
TJ-SPEC-013 implements ThoughtJack as an MCP *server* — it waits for agents to connect and exposes poisoned tools. This tests one direction: "can a malicious tool influence the agent?" MCP client mode tests the other direction: "can a malicious client manipulate an agent that exposes an MCP server interface?"
This matters because agents increasingly expose MCP server interfaces. An agent might serve tools to other agents, accept resource reads from orchestrators, or respond to prompt requests from frontends. Any of these callers could be adversarial.
MCP client mode enables ThoughtJack to:
- **Probe**: Discover what tools, resources, and prompts an agent exposes (`tools/list`, `resources/list`, `prompts/list`)
- **Inject**: Send crafted tool call arguments designed to trigger injection (`tools/call` with malicious `arguments`)
- **Extract**: Read resources that may contain sensitive data (`resources/read`)
- **Manipulate sampling**: When the server requests LLM sampling, respond with manipulated completions that steer the agent (`sampling/createMessage` response)
- **Exploit elicitation**: When the server requests user input, provide crafted responses that escalate privileges or bypass controls (`elicitation/create` response)
- **Subvert roots**: When the server requests filesystem roots, provide paths to sensitive directories (`roots/list` response)
Combined with MCP server mode and other protocol actors, this completes the MCP attack surface:

Both modes share the same MCP JSON-RPC protocol, the same transport implementations (TJ-SPEC-002), and the same trace format. The client mode reuses transport infrastructure but reverses the role — ThoughtJack is the one sending `initialize`, not receiving it.

### 2.2 Response Correlation
JSON-RPC responses contain only `id`, `result`/`error` — no `method` field. The transport correlates each response to its original request by tracking pending request IDs:

When a response arrives, the transport looks up `id` in the pending map, retrieves the original `method` and `params`, and returns a correlated `McpClientMessage::Response`.
This correlation is critical for two OATF requirements:
1. **Event type mapping**: The trigger `tools/call` fires on responses whose correlated request method was `tools/call`. Without correlation, response events would be untyped.
2. **Qualifier resolution**: `tools/call:calculator` matches when the *correlated request's* `params.name == "calculator"` (per OATF §7.1.2).
### 2.3 Server-Initiated Requests
MCP allows the server to send requests to the client. These are *not* responses — they have their own `id` and `method`:

## 3. Execution Model
### 3.1 Multiplexer Architecture
MCP is a bidirectional protocol. The server can send requests to the client (sampling, elicitation, roots) at any time — including *while the client is waiting for a response to its own request*. A naive design that blocks on `wait_for_response` deadlocks when the server needs a sampling response before completing a tool call.
ThoughtJack solves this with a background multiplexer task that continuously reads from the transport and routes messages to the appropriate handler:

The multiplexer runs as a background task for the entire lifetime of the MCP client actor. It owns the transport reader half exclusively — no lock contention on reads. The writer half is shared via `Arc<Mutex>` by the driver and handler, but writer locks are held only during brief serialization-and-write operations (not while waiting for messages). This eliminates the deadlock: server-initiated requests are dispatched to the handler task concurrently with the phase runner waiting for responses, and neither the reader nor the writers block each other.
### 3.2 Server Request Handler Task
A separate background task consumes server-initiated requests and sends responses. The handler reads the current phase state from a `HandlerState` (published by the driver on each phase entry) and fresh extractor values from a `watch::Receiver` (published by the `PhaseLoop` after each event). It emits events to the `PhaseLoop` via `handler_event_tx`:

The handler no longer accesses the `PhaseEngine` directly — it reads `HandlerState` for response building and emits events for the `PhaseLoop` to process. This cleanly separates response dispatch (handler's concern) from trace/extractor/trigger logic (`PhaseLoop`'s concern).
### 3.3 Phase Execution via PhaseDriver
The MCP client driver implements the `PhaseDriver` trait (TJ-SPEC-013 §8.4) and is consumed by a `PhaseLoop`. The driver handles MCP-specific work (action execution, request/response correlation via multiplexer, notification forwarding, server-request handler event forwarding); the `PhaseLoop` handles the common work (trace append, extractor capture, trigger evaluation, phase advancement, `await_extractors`).
The multiplexer and server-request handler run as background tasks for the entire actor lifetime. The driver forwards their events to the `PhaseLoop`'s `event_tx` during each phase.

**Deadlock prevention is preserved:** The multiplexer owns the transport reader exclusively — no mutex contention with writers. When `send_and_await` acquires the writer lock to send a request, it holds it only for the duration of the write. The multiplexer continues reading concurrently, routing server-initiated requests to the handler task. The handler acquires the writer lock briefly to send responses. The server then sends its response, which the multiplexer routes to the oneshot channel, unblocking `send_and_await`. At no point does any task hold a lock while waiting for incoming data.
**Event forwarding latency:** Server request handler events are buffered in `handler_event_rx` while the driver blocks on `send_and_await`. They are forwarded to the `PhaseLoop` between actions (via `forward_pending_events`) and in the post-action event loop. Trigger evaluation on handler events may be delayed by one request-response roundtrip. This is acceptable — the response is already sent by the handler; the event is captured for trace/indicator purposes.
### 3.4 Initialization Handshake
Before any phase executes, ThoughtJack performs the MCP initialization handshake as a client. The multiplexer is already running at this point, so server-initiated requests during initialization are handled concurrently.

### 3.7 Failure Modes
The multiplexer is the critical-path component for the MCP client actor. Every message flows through it. This section documents each failure path and the expected behavior.
#### Multiplexer Error Taxonomy
The `send_and_await` caller (§3.6) can encounter four distinct error conditions, currently collapsed into two error variants. The implementation MUST distinguish all four for debuggability:

#### Multiplexer Task Panic
**Likelihood:** Low. The multiplexer loop is straightforward (`recv` → route to channel). Panics would come from poisoned mutexes (another thread panicked while holding the lock) or logic errors in the correlation map.
**Behavior:** No recovery. A multiplexer panic means the state (pending response map, channel senders) may be corrupted. The actor fails immediately with `MultiplexerClosed::TransportError("multiplexer task panicked")`. No restart attempt.
**Implementation:** The multiplexer's `JoinHandle` is polled during `send_and_await`. If the handle resolves to a panic, the error is captured:

`catch_unwind` is NOT used — it masks bugs. Let the panic propagate through the JoinHandle where it can be detected and reported cleanly.
#### Handler Task Backpressure
The `server_request_tx` channel (§3.2) is changed from unbounded to bounded with a capacity of 64:

If the buffer is full (server flooding sampling/elicitation requests faster than the handler can process them), the multiplexer uses `try_send()` rather than blocking `send().await`. **The multiplexer MUST NOT block its read loop** — blocking prevents it from reading transport messages, which stalls response routing for all pending `send_and_await` calls, causing false `RequestTimeout` errors that mask the real problem (backpressure).

The `notification_tx` channel remains unbounded. Notifications are fire-and-forget (no response expected), arrive infrequently, and are drained each `drive_phase()` call. Bounding this channel risks dropping notifications that could trigger phase transitions.
#### Orphaned Response Senders on Shutdown
When the multiplexer loop breaks (any cause), all oneshot senders still in the `response_senders` map are dropped. Each waiting `response_rx` receives a `RecvError`. The close reason is captured BEFORE dropping:

### 4.4 Server-Initiated Request Handlers
Server-initiated requests (sampling, elicitation, roots) are handled by the background `server_request_handler` task (§3.2), not by the phase runner. This architectural split is what prevents the deadlock described in §3.1 — the phase runner can block awaiting a response while the handler task concurrently processes server requests that the server needs answered before it will send the response.

For the sandwich attack (§7.1), both MCP actors target the *same* agent. The `mcp_server` actor binds and waits for the agent to connect. The `mcp_client` actor connects to the agent's own MCP server interface. These are two separate transport connections — the orchestrator manages them independently.

Note the direction reversal for server-initiated requests: `sampling/createMessage` is `dir: incoming` (server sends to ThoughtJack), and the response is `dir: outgoing` (ThoughtJack sends back).
### 8.2 Indicator Evaluation
Indicators with `protocol: mcp` evaluate against trace entries from both `mcp_server` and `mcp_client` actors. In the sandwich attack, an indicator might match against the MCP client's received tool call response (did the agent leak data?) or the MCP server's received tool call request (did the agent call the poisoned tool?).
The indicator's `surface` disambiguates: `tool_response` examines response content, `tool_arguments` examines request content. The trace entry's `direction` determines which is which.

MCP client actors are configured through `thoughtjack run` (TJ-SPEC-013 §12). There is no standalone `mcp-client` subcommand.

**Transport inference:** The presence of `--mcp-client-command` implies stdio transport; `--mcp-client-endpoint` implies HTTP. If neither is set and the document has an `mcp_client` actor, ThoughtJack exits with an error. If the document has an `mcp_server` actor without `--mcp-server`, it uses stdio (default).

### 10.1 Connection Errors

ThoughtJack captures the error in the trace and fires the event as normal (with `is_error: true`). JSON-RPC errors are expected in adversarial testing — they indicate the server rejected the crafted request. An indicator can match on error responses to detect whether the server properly validated input.
### 10.3 Protocol Violations
If the server sends malformed JSON-RPC (missing required fields, wrong types), ThoughtJack logs a warning and skips the message. Lenient parsing ensures that even a partially broken server can be tested.

## 11. Edge Cases
### EC-MCPC-001: Multiplexer — Unmatched Response ID
**Scenario:** Server sends a JSON-RPC response with an `id` that has no pending request (e.g., stale ID from a timed-out request, or server bug).
**Expected:** Multiplexer has no registered oneshot sender for this ID. Warning logged: `"Received response for unknown request id: {id}"`. Response dropped. No crash.
### EC-MCPC-002: Multiplexer — Response Arrives After Timeout
**Scenario:** Client sends `tools/call`, times out after 5s. Server responds at t=7s.
**Expected:** Oneshot channel was already dropped when the `send_and_await` caller timed out. Multiplexer finds no sender for the ID. Late response dropped with debug log. No effect on phase engine.
### EC-MCPC-003: Deadlock Prevention — Server Sends Sampling During `tools/call` Await
**Scenario:** Client sends `tools/call` and awaits response. Before responding, server sends `sampling/createMessage` (server-initiated request).
**Expected:** Multiplexer routes the sampling request to the server_request_handler task. Handler builds response from `HandlerState`, sends it back. Server receives sampling response, then sends the `tools/call` response. Multiplexer routes the tool response to the waiting oneshot channel. No deadlock — the multiplexer and handler run concurrently with the awaiting driver.
### EC-MCPC-004: Deadlock Prevention — Multiple Interleaved Server Requests
**Scenario:** While awaiting a `tools/list` response, server sends `sampling/createMessage`, then `elicitation/create`, then `roots/list` — all before the `tools/list` response.
**Expected:** All three server requests routed to handler, processed sequentially, responses sent. `tools/list` response arrives eventually, routed to awaiting channel. All five messages (3 server requests + 3 handler responses + 1 tools/list response) appear in trace via ProtocolEvents.
### EC-MCPC-005: Initialization — Server Rejects Protocol Version
**Scenario:** ThoughtJack sends `initialize` with `protocolVersion: "2025-11-25"`. Server responds with error (unsupported version).
**Expected:** Initialization fails. Actor returns `status: error` with `"Server rejected initialization: {error}"`. No phases execute. Trace contains the initialize request and error response.
### EC-MCPC-006: Initialization — Server Sends Request Before Initialize
**Scenario:** Server sends `sampling/createMessage` before responding to `initialize`.
**Expected:** Multiplexer routes sampling to handler. Handler processes with initial (phase 0) state. Handler response sent. Server then sends initialize response. This is a protocol violation by the server, but ThoughtJack handles it gracefully — the handler task is already running.
### EC-MCPC-007: Server Sends Notification During Phase Transition
**Scenario:** Server sends `notifications/tools/list_changed` while the PhaseLoop is advancing phases (between `drive_phase` calls).
**Expected:** Multiplexer routes notification to `notification_rx`. The notification sits in the channel buffer until the next `drive_phase()` call drains it. No lost notifications — the notification channel is intentionally unbounded (§3.7).
### EC-MCPC-008: Action Sequence — All Actions Fail
**Scenario:** Phase defines 5 actions. All return JSON-RPC errors from the server.
**Expected:** Each error captured in trace. Error responses emitted as ProtocolEvents. PhaseLoop processes them normally — error responses can trigger phase transitions (if trigger matches error events). All 5 actions attempted regardless of prior failures (no short-circuit).
### EC-MCPC-009: Stdio Transport — Server Process Exits
**Scenario:** Server spawned via `--mcp-client-command`. Server process exits (crash or clean exit) mid-phase.
**Expected:** Transport `recv()` returns `None` (EOF). Multiplexer detects closed transport, shuts down. All pending oneshot channels receive errors. `drive_phase()` returns error. Actor status: `error`. Process exit code captured if available.
### EC-MCPC-010: HTTP Transport — Server Returns Non-JSON Response
**Scenario:** Server responds with `Content-Type: text/html` to a JSON-RPC POST.
**Expected:** JSON parse error. Warning logged. Lenient parsing (§10.3) skips the message. Multiplexer continues processing next messages.
### EC-MCPC-011: `subscribe_resource` — Server Never Sends Updates
**Scenario:** Client subscribes to a resource. Server acknowledges but never sends `notifications/resources/updated`.
**Expected:** Subscription action completes. Driver enters notification loop. No notification arrives. Phase timeout (or cancel from PhaseLoop trigger) eventually ends the phase. Valid test outcome — the server's subscription behavior is the observation.
### EC-MCPC-012: HandlerState — Stale State During Phase Transition
**Scenario:** Server sends `sampling/createMessage` at the exact moment the PhaseLoop is advancing phases. HandlerState was published for phase N, but PhaseLoop is now in phase N+1.
**Expected:** Handler responds using phase N state (one-phase stale). This is acceptable — the `RwLock` on `HandlerState` serializes reads and writes. The driver publishes updated state at the start of the next `drive_phase()` call. Brief staleness between phases is a negligible race with no security implications.
### EC-MCPC-013: Client Capabilities — Dynamic Feature Discovery
**Scenario:** Phase 0 state has `sampling_responses` (advertising sampling support). Phase 1 removes it.
**Expected:** Client capabilities advertised at `initialize` time reflect phase 0 (which is when init runs). Capabilities are NOT re-negotiated mid-session — MCP has no capability renegotiation mechanism. Server may still send sampling requests in phase 1; the handler responds using phase 1 state (no `sampling_responses`), returning a minimal default response.
