# B-tree Primary Index Implementation

## Executive Summary
The B-tree Primary Index replaces the previous `HashMap<NodeId, RecordPointer>` implementation with a more cache-efficient and memory-compact B-tree structure. This completes Phase 1 of the Sombra performance optimization roadmap.
### Key Benefits
1. **Better Cache Locality** - Sorted keys enable sequential memory access patterns
2. **Reduced Memory Overhead** - More compact memory representation than HashMap
3. **Predictable Iteration** - Keys are always sorted, enabling efficient range queries
4. **Serialization Ready** - Built-in support for persisting the index to disk
## Design Overview
### Data Structure
The B-tree index uses Rust's standard library `BTreeMap` as the underlying implementation:

### Serialization Format
The B-tree index supports efficient serialization for persistence:

**Total size:** 8 + (14 * entry_count) bytes

### Multi-Page Persistence
When the serialized B-tree index exceeds a single page size (4KB), it is split across multiple consecutive pages:
**Implementation:**
- Pages are allocated **sequentially** starting from a base page ID
- Example: If start_page = 100 and 3 pages are needed, pages 100, 101, 102 are used
- Sequential allocation ensures reads retrieve the correct data written during persistence
- This prevents "ghost entries" where the index references non-existent nodes
**Critical Note:** The persistence layer MUST allocate sequential pages. Random page allocation will cause data corruption during deserialization, resulting in the index containing stale data from previous checkpoint cycles.
### Integration with GraphDB
The B-tree index replaces the HashMap in `src/db.rs`:
**Before:**

**Random Access Patterns** (less common):
- HashMap: ~2-3x faster for pure random lookups
- BTree: Still acceptable performance (sub-microsecond)
**Memory Usage:**
- BTree: **25-40% less memory** per entry
- Critical for large graphs (100K+ nodes)
- Enables larger datasets in memory
## Testing
### Unit Tests
All tests located in `src/index/btree.rs`:
