# CI/CD Testing Infrastructure - Summary

This document provides a quick overview of the comprehensive testing
and automation infrastructure added to prevent CI/CD issues from recurring.

## What Was Added

### 1. Comprehensive Test Suite

Added **31 tests** in `tests/ci_config_tests.rs` covering:

- **Link checking**: Validates `.lychee.toml` config, placeholder URL exclusions, and link check workflows
- **Markdown linting**: Validates markdown formatting, language identifiers, and technical term consistency
- **CI workflows**: Validates workflow configuration, concurrency groups, timeouts, and permissions
- **MSRV consistency**: Validates Rust version consistency across all config files

All tests are **data-driven** and easy to extend with new test cases.

### 2. Helper Scripts

Three new scripts for fast local validation:

| Script | Purpose | Usage |
|--------|---------|-------|
| `scripts/check-links-fast.sh` | Fast link checking on modified files | `./scripts/check-links-fast.sh` |
| `scripts/validate-lychee-config.sh` | Validate `.lychee.toml` configuration | `./scripts/validate-lychee-config.sh` |
| `scripts/check-markdown.sh` | Markdown linting with auto-fix | `./scripts/check-markdown.sh [fix]` |

### 3. Enhanced Pre-commit Hook

Updated `.githooks/pre-commit` to include:

- Code formatting checks
- Markdown linting (if pinned markdownlint-cli2 version installed)
- Link checking on staged files (if lychee installed, offline mode for speed)
- Panic-prone pattern detection

### 4. Comprehensive Documentation

Created `docs/ci-cd-testing.md` with:

- Detailed explanation of each test category
- How to run tests locally
- Troubleshooting guide with real examples
- Architecture decisions and design principles
- How to extend the test suite

## Quick Start

### Run All Tests

```bash
# Run full test suite
cargo test --test ci_config_tests
# Run specific test category
cargo test --test ci_config_tests test_lychee
cargo test --test ci_config_tests test_markdown
cargo test --test ci_config_tests test_workflows
```

### Install Pre-commit Hook

```bash
./scripts/enable-hooks.sh
```

### Quick Validation Before Committing

```bash
# Check markdown files
./scripts/check-markdown.sh
# Check links (fast, offline mode)
./scripts/check-links-fast.sh --staged
# Validate lychee config
./scripts/validate-lychee-config.sh
```

## What Problems Does This Prevent?

This infrastructure prevents **entire categories** of CI/CD issues:

### 1. Link Check Failures

**Before:** CI failed because lychee tried to check placeholder URLs like `https://github.com/owner/repo`

**Now:**

- Test validates `.lychee.toml` excludes placeholder URLs
- Test warns if actual placeholder URLs exist in docs
- Pre-commit hook catches broken internal links before commit
- Fast local script for checking links on modified files

### 2. Markdown Lint Failures

**Before:** CI failed because code blocks were missing language identifiers

**Now:**

- Test validates all code blocks have language identifiers
- Test checks for common markdown formatting issues
- Pre-commit hook runs markdownlint on changed files
- Auto-fix script available for quick repairs

### 3. MSRV Inconsistencies

**Before:** CI failed because Dockerfile used different Rust version than Cargo.toml

**Now:**

- Comprehensive tests validate version consistency across all files
- Tests validate version normalization logic in CI
- Tests ensure local scripts match CI behavior

### 4. AWK/Shell Script Errors

**Before:** CI failed because of non-portable AWK patterns or bash syntax errors

**Now:**

- Test validates doc-validation workflow includes shellcheck
- Shellcheck runs on inline workflow scripts
- Tests catch AWK compatibility issues

### 5. Workflow Configuration Drift

**Before:** Manual workflow changes could break CI without validation

**Now:**

- Tests validate all critical workflows exist
- Tests check workflows use concurrency groups
- Tests check workflows have timeouts
- Tests validate minimal permissions principle

## Test Coverage Statistics

| Category | Tests | Lines of Code |
|----------|-------|---------------|
| Link checking | 5 | ~200 |
| Markdown linting | 5 | ~300 |
| CI workflow validation | 6 | ~350 |
| Configuration validation | 15 | ~800 |
| **Total** | **31** | **~1650** |

## Design Principles

1. **Prevent categories, not just bugs**: Tests catch entire classes of issues, not just specific instances
2. **Fast feedback loops**: Pre-commit hooks and helper scripts provide immediate feedback
3. **Data-driven**: Easy to add new test cases without duplicating code
4. **Clear diagnostics**: Error messages include explanations and suggestions
5. **Layered defense**: Multiple validation layers (pre-commit → local tests → CI)

## Performance

- **Pre-commit hook**: <5 seconds (with all tools installed)
- **Fast link check**: <10 seconds (offline mode, modified files only)
- **Full test suite**: ~110 seconds (comprehensive validation)
- **CI workflow**: 5-10 minutes (full integration testing)

## Maintenance

### Adding New Test Cases

All tests are data-driven. To add new validation:

1. Add test case to existing test array
2. Run tests to verify
3. Update documentation if needed

Example:

```rust
// Add to test_lychee_excludes_placeholder_urls
let test_cases = vec![
    // ... existing cases ...
    ("https://new-placeholder.com", "New placeholder pattern"),
];
```

### Extending Coverage

To add new test categories:

1. Create new test function in `tests/ci_config_tests.rs`
2. Follow existing patterns (data-driven, clear error messages)
3. Add documentation to `docs/ci-cd-testing.md`
4. Update this summary

## Success Metrics

This infrastructure was created in response to **4 actual CI failures** in recent commits. The tests now validate:

- ✅ 5+ link checking scenarios
- ✅ 5+ markdown formatting patterns
- ✅ 6+ workflow configuration requirements
- ✅ 15+ configuration consistency checks

**Result**: Comprehensive protection against entire categories of CI/CD issues, with fast local feedback and clear diagnostics.
