# Resume Feature Testing Guide
## Quick Test Results ✓
All integration tests **PASSING**:
```
running 3 tests
✓ test_resume_bitmap_workflow ... ok
✓ test_resume_skip_set_generation ... ok
✓ test_resume_protocol_messages ... ok
```
## Unit Test Coverage
### 1. Bitmap Workflow Test
Simulates a complete upload → interrupt → resume cycle:
- **Phase 1**: Upload 300/500 chunks (60%), save bitmap, simulate crash
- **Phase 2**: Load bitmap, find 200 missing chunks, resume transfer
- **Phase 3**: Clean up bitmap file after completion
**Results**: ✓ All assertions pass, bitmap persistence works correctly
### 2. Skip Set Generation Test
Verifies the resume logic for determining which chunks to skip:
- Given 9 received chunks out of 100 total
- Correctly identifies 9 chunks to skip
- Correctly identifies 91 chunks to send
**Results**: ✓ Skip set logic works correctly
### 3. Protocol Messages Test
Validates protobuf serialization/deserialization:
- `ResumeRequest`: session_id, received_chunks, bitmap, last_chunk_id
- `ResumeResponse`: accepted, missing_chunks, chunks_remaining
**Results**: ✓ Message encoding/decoding works correctly
## End-to-End Manual Testing
### Prerequisites
```bash
# Build the project
cargo build --examples
# Create a test file (100MB)
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/tmp/testfile.bin bs=1M count=100
```
### Test Scenario 1: Basic Resume
**Terminal 1 - Server:**
```bash
cd /home/heathknowles/Documents/Code/Rust/sftpx
RUST_LOG=info cargo run --example file_server
```
**Terminal 2 - Client (Initial Upload):**
```bash
cd /home/heathknowles/Documents/Code/Rust/sftpx
RUST_LOG=info cargo run --example client_upload -- /tmp/testfile.bin 192.168.8.93
# Watch for logs:
# "Client: Starting file send: /tmp/testfile.bin"
# "Client: Sending chunk 1/3125..."
# "Client: Sending chunk 50/3125..."
# Interrupt at ~50% with Ctrl+C
```
**Expected Behavior:**
- Client saves bitmap to `{session_dir}/{session_id}.bitmap`
- Server saves bitmap to `{output_dir}/.{session_id}.bitmap`
- Both log: "Saved resume bitmap: X chunks received"
**Terminal 2 - Client (Resume):**
```bash
# Run the same command again
RUST_LOG=info cargo run --example client_upload -- /tmp/testfile.bin 192.168.8.93
# Watch for logs:
# "Client: found saved bitmap, attempting resume..."
# "Client: loaded bitmap with 1562 chunks already received"
# "Server: received resume request with 1562 received chunks"
# "Server: will send 1563 missing chunks"
# "Client: will skip 1562 chunks, send 1563 chunks"
```
**Expected Behavior:**
- Client detects bitmap file and initiates resume
- Server calculates missing chunks from bitmap
- Only missing chunks are transmitted
- Both delete bitmap after successful completion
**Verification:**
```bash
# Compare checksums
sha256sum /tmp/testfile.bin
sha256sum {server_output_dir}/testfile.bin
# Should match exactly
```
### Test Scenario 2: Multiple Interrupts
Repeat the interrupt/resume cycle multiple times:
1. Upload 0% → 30% (Ctrl+C)
2. Resume 30% → 60% (Ctrl+C)
3. Resume 60% → 100% (Complete)
**Expected Behavior:**
- Each resume loads the previous bitmap
- Progress accumulates across interruptions
- Final transfer is complete and valid
### Test Scenario 3: Large File Resume
```bash
# Create 1GB test file
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/tmp/largefile.bin bs=1M count=1024
# Upload with interrupts at various points
RUST_LOG=info cargo run --example client_upload -- /tmp/largefile.bin 192.168.8.93
```
**Monitor:**
- Bitmap save frequency (every 10 chunks)
- Memory usage (should remain constant)
- Resume detection speed (should be instant)
### Test Scenario 4: Error Recovery
**Corrupt Bitmap Test:**
```bash
# Start upload, interrupt at 50%
# Manually corrupt the bitmap file
echo "corrupt" > {session_dir}/{session_id}.bitmap
# Resume - should gracefully fall back to fresh transfer
RUST_LOG=info cargo run --example client_upload -- /tmp/testfile.bin 192.168.8.93
```
**Expected Behavior:**
- Client logs: "Failed to load resume bitmap: ..."
- Client logs: "Starting fresh transfer"
- Server receives no resume request
- Transfer completes successfully
**Mismatched Session Test:**
```bash
# Start upload of fileA.bin
# Interrupt and change to fileB.bin with same session_id
RUST_LOG=info cargo run --example client_upload -- /tmp/fileB.bin 192.168.8.93
```
**Expected Behavior:**
- Server validates session context
- May reject resume if file metadata differs
- Falls back to fresh transfer
## Performance Expectations
### Resume Overhead
- **Bitmap loading**: < 10ms for 10,000 chunks
- **Missing chunks calculation**: < 5ms for 10,000 chunks
- **Resume protocol exchange**: < 100ms (single round-trip)
### Network Efficiency
- **Without Resume**: 100% of chunks transmitted
- **With Resume (50% interrupt)**: 50% of chunks transmitted
- **Bandwidth Savings**: Proportional to received percentage
### Storage
- **Bitmap size**: ~1.25KB per 10,000 chunks
- **Disk writes**: Every 10 chunks (minimal overhead)
- **Cleanup**: Automatic on success or manual deletion
## Debugging Tips
### Enable Verbose Logging
```bash
RUST_LOG=debug cargo run --example client_upload -- /tmp/testfile.bin 192.168.8.93
```
### Check Bitmap Files
```bash
# List bitmap files
ls -lh {session_dir}/*.bitmap
ls -lh {output_dir}/.*.bitmap
# Inspect bitmap metadata (first 16 bytes)
### Monitor Network Traffic
```bash
# Watch QUIC packets
tcpdump -i any -n udp port 4433
```
### Trace Resume Protocol
Look for these log entries:
- **Client**: "found saved bitmap, attempting resume"
- **Server**: "received resume request with X received chunks"
- **Client**: "will skip X chunks, send Y chunks"
- **Both**: "Saved resume bitmap: X chunks received"
- **Both**: "Deleted resume bitmap after successful transfer"
## Known Limitations
1. **No CLI Resume Flag**: Automatic detection only (manual resume not yet implemented)
2. **Single File**: Multi-file batch resume not supported
3. **No Compression**: Bitmap stored raw (RLE compression planned)
4. **Session ID Required**: Must use same session_id for resume
## Future Enhancements
- [ ] `--resume <session_id>` CLI flag for explicit resume
- [ ] `--list-resumable` to show interrupted transfers
- [ ] Bitmap compression (RLE) for large files
- [ ] Combined resume + dedup support
- [ ] Multi-file resume for batch transfers
- [ ] Resume timeout (auto-delete old bitmaps)
## Troubleshooting
### Resume Not Detected
- Check bitmap file exists: `ls {session_dir}/{session_id}.bitmap`
- Verify session_id matches between attempts
- Check file permissions on bitmap file
### Resume Rejected by Server
- Check server logs for validation errors
- Verify session_id matches on both sides
- Ensure file metadata (size, name) matches
### Bitmap Not Saving
- Check disk space availability
- Verify write permissions on session_dir
- Enable debug logging to see save attempts
### Transfer Hangs During Resume
- Check resume protocol timeout (2 seconds)
- Verify network connectivity
- Look for QUIC flow control issues in logs
