# Efficient Float Solver Implementation Progress

## Overview
This document tracks the detailed progress of transforming the CSP solver from inefficient binary search on float intervals to optimal algorithms based on problem type classification.

**Core Problem**: Simple problems like "maximize x < 5.5" take 287 propagations instead of 1 analytical step due to binary search treating float intervals like discrete domains.

**Solution Strategy**: Problem classification + algorithm selection + incremental integration.

#### **Step 2.3: Model Integration** - IN PROGRESS
**Status**: 🔄 **IN PROGRESS** - Connect optimizers to Model.maximize()/minimize() API

- ✅ Added VarId/usize conversion utilities (`var_id_to_index`, `index_to_var_id`)
- ✅ Integrated optimization router into Model API with proper fallback to search
- ✅ All tests passing (4/4) with safe no-hang implementation

**Commit**: "Integrate optimization router into Model API with safe fallback (Step 2.3.1)"

**Key Achievement**: The optimization router is now successfully integrated into the Model's `minimize()` and `maximize()` methods. For Step 2.3.1, the router always falls back to the original search algorithm to ensure no hanging, but the infrastructure is in place for implementing actual optimization in Step 2.3.2.

## Integration Challenges Identified

### **Technical Challenges**

1. **View Interface Complexity**:
   - `minimize(objective: impl View)` requires detecting if objective is simple variable
   - Need to handle complex expressions that might not be optimizable
   - Must extract target `VarId` from `View` interface

2. **Solution Format Compatibility**:
   - Convert `OptimizationResult` to `Solution` format
   - Preserve all variable assignments (not just optimized one)
   - Maintain solve statistics (propagation_count, node_count)
   - Consistent error handling patterns

3. **Fallback Strategy Requirements**:
   - If optimization fails → fall back to existing search
   - If problem type not optimizable → use existing search
   - If constraints too complex → use existing search

4. **API Preservation**:
   - Same method signatures for backward compatibility
   - Same return types and error handling
   - No breaking changes for existing user code

### **Code Quality Standards**

- ✅ No `panic!` calls - proper error handling throughout
- ✅ Comprehensive test coverage for all new functionality
- ✅ Type-safe enums instead of strings for performance
- ✅ Detailed documentation and examples
- ✅ Incremental commits for each completed subtask
