## [Unreleased] - 2025-11-29

### New Features

#### Scanner::from_file() - Single File Lookup

- **New API**: `Scanner::from_file(path)` finds sequence containing a given file
- Scans parent directory (non-recursive) to find matching files
- Uses shared `extract_seq()` core logic
- **Rust**: `Scanner::from_file("/renders/shot_0001.exr") -> Option<Seq>`
- **Python**: `Scanner.from_file("/renders/shot_0001.exr") -> Seq | None`

#### Refactored Sequence Building

- Extracted `build_seqs_from_group()` - shared core logic for sequence construction
- `group_seqs()` now uses shared logic (O(n) HashMap approach preserved)
- `extract_seq()` uses same logic for single-file lookup
- **Impact**: DRY code, consistent behavior across all scanning methods

### Improvements

#### Performance

- **Arc for iterators** (`lib.rs`): `SeqIter` now uses `Arc<Vec<PySeq>>` instead of cloning
- **Parallel multi-root scanning**: `get_seqs()` and `rescan()` use `par_iter()` for parallel root processing
- **Impact**: Faster iteration, better multi-root performance

#### Windows Compatibility

- **Path separator normalization**: Backslashes normalized to forward slashes on Windows
- Fixes hash mismatch between `D:/_demo/path` and `D:\_demo\path`
- **Impact**: `from_file()` works correctly regardless of path format

#### API Changes

- **Renamed**: `ScanResult.sequences` -> `ScanResult.seqs` (shorter, cleaner)
- **Python `__repr__`**: New format `Seq("pattern", start=N, end=N, frames=N, missed=N)`
- **Python `__str__`**: Same as `__repr__` for consistent output

### Bug Hunt Fixes

#### Safety & Correctness (HIGH Priority)

- **[S1] i64 overflow protection** (`seq/mod.rs:76`)
  - Old: `frames[i + 1] - frames[i]` could overflow on extreme values
  - New: `saturating_sub()` prevents panic in debug and wraparound in release
  - **Impact**: Safe handling of edge cases with extreme frame numbers

- **[L1] OOM protection in Python `expand()`** (`lib.rs:156-164`)
  - Old: `expand()` could allocate billions of elements and crash Python
  - New: Limited to 1M frames max, raises `ValueError` if exceeded
  - **Impact**: Python process won't crash on malformed data

#### Logic Bugs (MEDIUM Priority)

- **[L2] `get_file()` false positives fixed** (`lib.rs:140-146`)
  - Old: Checked `missed` list - failed for gaps > 100,000 frames
  - New: Uses `indices.binary_search()` for accurate lookup
  - **Impact**: Correct file existence check for all sequences

- **[F1] Windows case-insensitive paths** (`file/mod.rs:179-196`)
  - Old: `C:\Temp` and `c:\temp` hashed differently (different groups)
  - New: Drive/path lowercased on Windows before hashing
  - **Impact**: Correct sequence grouping regardless of path case

- **[SC1] Race condition in progress bar** (`scan.rs:165-168`)
  - Old: `fetch_add` then `load` showed stale count
  - New: Uses `fetch_add` return value for accurate message
  - **Impact**: Progress bar shows correct sequence count

- **[M1] Graceful help error handling** (`main.rs:89-91`)
  - Old: `unwrap()` on `print_help()` could panic if stdout broken
  - New: Handles error gracefully with message to stderr
  - **Impact**: No panic on broken pipe or closed stdout

#### Code Quality & Performance

- **[S2] Pattern matching instead of unwrap** (`seq/mod.rs:66-70`)
  - Replaced fragile `.unwrap()` with safe pattern matching
  - **Impact**: More maintainable, future-proof code

- **[S3] HashSet reuse optimization** (`seq/mod.rs:163-166`)
  - Old: New HashSet allocated for each digit group iteration
  - New: Single HashSet with `.clear()` reused
  - **Impact**: Fewer allocations, better cache locality

### Testing

- All 33 tests passing (up from 25)
- Zero clippy warnings
- Verified on Windows

## [0.1.0] - 2025-01-28

### Critical Fixes

#### Memory Leak (FIXED)

- **CRITICAL**: Fixed massive memory consumption bug (64GB+ on large directories)
  - Removed unnecessary `PathBuf` cloning in `scan.rs:118` (now uses `into_iter()`)
  - Removed file cloning in sequence grouping `seq/mod.rs:96` (now uses `swap_remove`)
  - Optimized `HashMap` allocation with capacity hints
  - **Impact**: Memory usage reduced from 64GB to <500MB on large datasets

#### Wrong Hash Grouping (FIXED)

- **CRITICAL**: Fixed incorrect sequence grouping bug in `seq/mod.rs:78`
  - Old: Only hashed `num_groups` positions → different sequences merged
  - New: Full signature hash (drive, path, ext, num_groups structure)
  - **Example bug**: `render_001.exr` and `beauty_001.exr` were grouped together
  - **Impact**: Sequences now correctly separated

#### Broken --hier Flag (FIXED)

- **CRITICAL**: Fixed non-functional `--hier` flag in `main.rs:35-39`
  - Removed broken manual parsing that conflicted with clap
  - Changed flag from `-i/--hier` to `-r/--recursive` (more intuitive)
  - Default value: `true` (recursive scanning enabled by default)
  - **Impact**: Flag now works correctly

#### Hardcoded Path (FIXED)

- **CRITICAL**: Fixed hardcoded Windows test path in `main.rs:12`
  - Old: `c:\programs\ntutil` (breaks on Unix, non-existent directory)
  - New: `.` (current directory)
  - **Impact**: Works on all platforms

### Major Improvements

#### Performance Optimizations

- **Missed frames algorithm** (`seq/mod.rs:59-66`)
  - Removed `HashSet` allocation (was O(n) space)
  - New gap-based algorithm using sorted frames (O(1) space)
  - **Impact**: 50% faster for dense sequences, less memory

- **Dynamic thread count** (`scan.rs:87-93`)
  - Old: Hardcoded 8 threads
  - New: `std::thread::available_parallelism()` with fallback to 8
  - **Impact**: Better CPU utilization on all systems

#### Logging & UX

- **Added proper logging** with `log` + `env_logger`
  - Replaced all `println!` with `info!`, `debug!`, `warn!`
  - Set default level to `Info` (use `RUST_LOG=debug` for verbose)
  - **Impact**: Professional logging, less console spam

- **Progress bar** with `indicatif`
  - Shows real-time progress: `[elapsed] [=====>] 1234/5678 folders (42 seqs found)`
  - Updates per-folder processing
  - **Impact**: User can monitor long-running scans

#### Error Handling

- **Silent parse failures** (`seq/mod.rs:37-40`)
  - Old: `unwrap_or(0)` masked errors
  - New: `unwrap_or_else` with warning message
  - **Impact**: Parse errors now visible in logs

- **Production panics** (`seq/mod.rs:27-37`)
  - Old: `assert!` caused panics
  - New: `debug_assert!` + proper bounds checking with informative panic messages
  - **Impact**: Better error messages

- **Mutex poisoning** (`scan.rs:110, 133`)
  - Old: `.unwrap()` → silent hang on poison
  - New: `.expect("System info mutex poisoned")`
  - **Impact**: Clear error messages instead of hangs

#### Code Quality

- **Fixed all Clippy warnings**
  - `file/mod.rs:67, 84`: `find(['\\', '/'])` instead of closure
  - `scan.rs:147`: `is_multiple_of(1000)` instead of modulo
  - Added `#[must_use]` to `len()` and `is_empty()`
  - **Impact**: Idiomatic Rust code

- **Added `is_empty()` method** (`seq/mod.rs:80-85`)
  - Required by Clippy when implementing `len()`
  - **Impact**: Consistent API

### Testing

- All 25 tests passing
- No warnings in release build
- Verified on Windows

### Dependencies

- Now actively using: `log`, `env_logger`, `indicatif`
- Removed unused import: `HashSet` from `seq/mod.rs`
