- **Extreme TDD**: RED → GREEN → REFACTOR for all features
- **Zero Defects**: No regressions, all tests passing
- **Complexity Refactoring**: Fixed 9 functions exceeding thresholds
  - Extracted 28 helper functions
  - All modified files now ≤10 complexity

## Technical Implementation

### Architecture
```
Lexer (captures) → Parser (associates) → AST (stores) → Formatter (emits)
```

### Key Components

#### 1. Lexer (src/frontend/lexer.rs)
- Captures comment tokens instead of discarding
- Preserves exact whitespace (no .trim())
- Token types: `LineComment`, `DocComment`, `BlockComment`

#### 2. AST (src/frontend/ast.rs)
- Added `Comment` and `CommentKind` types
- Added `leading_comments: Vec<Comment>` to `Expr`
- Added `trailing_comment: Option<Comment>` to `Expr`
- Updated 30+ Expr initializations across 7 files

#### 3. Parser (src/frontend/parser/mod.rs)
- Added `consume_leading_comments()` method
- Added `consume_trailing_comment()` method
- Added `token_to_comment()` helper
- Modified `parse_expr_with_precedence_recursive()` to attach comments

#### 4. Formatter (src/quality/formatter.rs)
- Added `format_comment()` method
- Modified `format_expr()` to emit leading/trailing comments
- Preserves exact comment formatting

## Lessons Learned

### Toyota Way Principles Applied

1. **Jidoka (Stop The Line)**: When pre-commit hooks blocked due to complexity violations, we stopped and fixed ALL violations across 2 files (9 functions total) rather than bypassing quality gates.

2. **Genchi Genbutsu (Go and See)**: We examined actual lexer/parser/formatter code to understand exact behavior before implementing changes.

3. **Kaizen (Continuous Improvement)**: Each commit improved code quality through systematic refactoring.

4. **Poka-Yoke (Error Proofing)**: Extreme TDD with 12 tests prevents regression of comment preservation.

### Complexity Refactoring Impact

**Problem**: Pre-commit hooks blocked commits due to complexity violations.

**Solution**: Refactored 9 functions across 2 files:
- `parse_lambda_params`: cognitive 21 → 8
- `parse_function_with_visibility`: cognitive 12 → 5
- `parse_arguments_list`: cognitive 13 → 5
- `parse_optional_method_or_field_access`: cognitive 15 → 3
- `consume_trait_bound_tokens`: cognitive 12 → 5
- `parse_expr_with_precedence_recursive`: cognitive 11 → 3
- `try_ternary_operator`: cognitive 13 → 5
- `try_new_actor_operators`: cognitive 24 → 3 (87.5% reduction!)
- `try_parse_macro_call`: cognitive 19 → 5 (73.7% reduction!)

**Result**: All functions now meet ≤10 complexity thresholds.

## Next Steps

### Sprint 2: Complete ExprKind Coverage (v3.90.0)

**Current Status**: 37/129 ExprKind variants implemented (28.7%)

**Recommended Approach**: Incremental implementation
- **Week 1**: Implement 10-15 high-priority variants (Lambda, Array, Struct, etc.)
- **Week 2**: Implement 10-15 medium-priority variants (Trait, Impl, Class, etc.)
- **Week 3**: Implement remaining variants and comprehensive testing

**Priority Variants** (Top 15):
1. Lambda - functional programming core
2. Array - data structures
3. StructLiteral - object construction
4. ObjectLiteral - JavaScript-style objects
5. Throw/TryCatch - error handling
6. QualifiedName - module system
7. Ternary - conditional expressions
8. TypeCast - type conversions
9. Await/AsyncBlock/Spawn - async support
10. IfLet/LetPattern - pattern matching
11. Actor/ActorSend/ActorQuery - actor model
12. Pipeline - functional chaining
13. Slice/Range - collection operations
14. Reference/PreIncrement/PostIncrement - operators
15. Ok/Err/Some/None - Result/Option types

**Estimated Effort**: 2-3 weeks for complete coverage

### Sprint 3: Style Preservation & Configuration (v3.91.0)

After ExprKind coverage is complete:
- Implement configuration system (.ruchy-fmt.toml)
- Add ignore directives (// ruchy-fmt-ignore)
- Fix style preservation issues
- Comprehensive property testing

## Conclusion

Sprint 1 demonstrates the power of Extreme TDD combined with Toyota Way principles. By refusing to bypass quality gates and systematically addressing complexity violations, we not only achieved 100% comment preservation but also significantly improved the overall codebase quality.

**Key Success Factors**:
1. ✅ Clear goal: 100% comment preservation
2. ✅ Extreme TDD: Write tests first (RED phase)
3. ✅ Systematic implementation: Lexer → AST → Parser → Formatter
4. ✅ Quality gates: No compromises on complexity
5. ✅ Toyota Way: Stop the line for defects

**Ready for**: Sprint 2 - Complete ExprKind Coverage
