# MCP Daemon Module

Optional background daemon for persistent MCP server connections.

## Overview

This module provides two operation modes for MCP tool execution:

1. **Direct Mode** (default): Spawns temporary MCP clients on-demand
2. **Daemon Mode** (optional): Persistent background process with connection pooling

## Usage

### As a User

```bash
# Direct mode (works immediately, no setup)
rk mcp call-tool gigathink '{"query": "What is reasoning?"}'
# Start daemon for better performance
rk mcp daemon start
# Call tool (auto-uses daemon if running)
rk mcp call-tool gigathink '{"query": "What is reasoning?"}'
# Daemon management
rk mcp daemon status
rk mcp daemon stop
rk mcp daemon restart
```

### As a Developer

```rust
use reasonkit_core::mcp::daemon;
// Call tool (auto-detects daemon or uses direct mode)
let result = daemon::call_tool(
    "gigathink",
    serde_json::json!({"query": "What is reasoning?"}),
).await?;
// Check if daemon is running
if daemon::daemon_is_running().await? {
    println!("Daemon is active");
}
```

## Configuration

### Server Config: `~/.config/reasonkit/mcp_servers.json`

```json
[
  {
    "name": "reasonkit-thinktools",
    "command": "rk",
    "args": ["serve-mcp"],
    "env": {},
    "timeout_secs": 30,
    "auto_reconnect": false,
    "max_retries": 1
  }
]
```

### Daemon Config: `~/.config/reasonkit/daemon.toml`

```toml
[daemon]
enabled = true
auto_start = true
health_check_interval = 30
[daemon.logging]
level = "info"
max_file_size = "10MB"
max_files = 5
```

## Performance

| Operation  | Direct Mode | Daemon Mode     | Improvement    |
| ---------- | ----------- | --------------- | -------------- |
| Cold start | ~500ms      | ~50ms           | **10x faster** |
| Warm call  | ~300ms      | ~20ms           | **15x faster** |
| Memory     | 20MB/call   | 50MB persistent | Shared pool    |

## Security

- **IPC**: Unix socket with 0600 permissions (user-only)
- **Process**: Isolated per-user daemon
- **Input**: JSON schema validation
- **Limits**: 1MB max message size, 60s timeout

## Troubleshooting

### Daemon won't start

```bash
# Check socket
lsof ~/.local/share/reasonkit/mcp.sock
# Check logs
tail -f ~/.local/share/reasonkit/logs/mcp-daemon.log
# Clean stale state
rm ~/.local/share/reasonkit/daemon.pid
rm ~/.local/share/reasonkit/mcp.sock
```

### Tool execution fails

```bash
# Test direct mode
rk mcp call-tool --no-daemon gigathink '{"query": "test"}'
# Restart daemon
rk mcp daemon restart
```

## Development

### Building

```bash
cargo build --release --features mcp
```

### Testing

```bash
# Unit tests
cargo test --features mcp -- daemon
# Integration tests (requires daemon)
cargo test --features mcp --test mcp_daemon_integration
# Manual testing
./target/release/rk mcp daemon start
./target/release/rk mcp call-tool gigathink '{"query": "test"}'
./target/release/rk mcp daemon stop
```

### Adding New Features

1. **New IPC command**: Add to `IpcMessage` enum in `ipc_server.rs`
2. **New daemon command**: Add to CLI in `mcp_cli.rs`
3. **New health check**: Extend `HealthMonitor` in `health.rs`

## Next Steps
