### Next Steps (Priority Order)
1. **Manual Clippy Warning Resolution** (High Priority)
   - Focus on high-impact categories: format strings, structure repetition
   - Address const fn candidates for performance improvements
   - Review and fix unnecessarily wrapped Result types
   - Target: Reduce to <500 warnings (67% reduction from current 1,508)

2. **File Refactoring Using splitrs** (Critical - Policy Violation)
   - Start with largest files (quantum_machine_learning_layers.rs: 3,326 lines)
   - Use splitrs tool for automated dependency-aware splitting
   - Maintain <2000 lines per file as per refactoring policy
   - Target: All 14 files refactored within policy compliance

3. **Documentation Updates**
   - Update SCIRS2 integration status (mark SIMD and GPU as complete)
   - Document Phase 26 achievements in changelog
   - Update version notes for beta-3 release

**Session Summary**: Successfully resolved all compilation errors and applied automated quality improvements. Codebase now compiles cleanly with all 886 tests passing. Ready for manual warning resolution and file refactoring phases.

### Phase 26 Continued: Refactoring Investigation and Findings (2025-12-05)

#### Automated Refactoring with splitrs - Lessons Learned

**Attempted Refactoring**: quantum_machine_learning_layers.rs (3,326 lines → attempted 30 modules)

**splitrs Analysis**:
- Successfully analyzed file structure: 127 items (72 types, 13 functions, 28 trait impls)
- Generated 30 module files with logical separation
- Created proper mod.rs with re-exports
- Backup created automatically for safety

**Critical Issue Discovered**:
- **443 compilation errors** after refactoring
- Root cause: Complex cross-module dependencies not preserved
- Missing imports in split modules (use statements not propagated)
- Types reference each other extensively (QMLConfig, QMLUtils, QuantumMLFramework, etc.)
- splitrs doesn't handle `use super::*` or intra-module imports automatically

**Example Errors**:
```rust
error[E0433]: failed to resolve: use of undeclared type `QMLUtils`
error[E0433]: failed to resolve: use of undeclared type `QMLArchitectureType`
error[E0433]: failed to resolve: use of undeclared type `QuantumMLFramework`
```

**Conclusion**:
- **splitrs is excellent for** files with clear module boundaries and minimal cross-dependencies
- **splitrs struggles with** tightly coupled code with extensive type interdependencies
- **Files requiring manual refactoring**: All 14 files >2000 lines have similar coupling issues

#### Alternative Refactoring Strategies

**Option 1: Manual Incremental Refactoring**
- Identify logical boundaries within each large file
- Extract self-contained components first (e.g., data structures, utilities)
- Add proper `pub use` statements manually
- Test compilation at each step
- **Pros**: Full control, guaranteed correctness
- **Cons**: Time-consuming (estimated 2-4 hours per file)

**Option 2: Trait-Based Decomposition**
- Extract trait definitions to separate files
- Move implementations to impl modules
- Use Rust's orphan rules to maintain structure
- **Pros**: Clean separation of interface and implementation
- **Cons**: May require API changes

**Option 3: Feature-Based Modules**
- Group related functionality (e.g., all training code, all data encoding code)
- Create feature modules with clear public APIs
- **Pros**: Better for maintainability
- **Cons**: Requires careful dependency analysis

**Option 4: Accept Current State** (Pragmatic Approach)
- Mark files >2000 lines with TODO comments for future refactoring
- Focus on code quality (clippy warnings, documentation)
- Refactor opportunistically when touching code
- **Pros**: Unblocks other work, practical
- **Cons**: Violates refactoring policy (but common in large codebases)

#### Recommended Path Forward

**Immediate Term** (Current Session):
1. Document refactoring challenges in TODO.md ✓
2. Focus on high-impact code quality improvements (clippy warnings)
3. Ensure all tests pass and code is production-ready
4. Mark large files with inline TODO comments for future work

**Near Term** (Next 1-2 sessions):
1. Manually refactor 1-2 smaller files (2000-2200 lines) as proof of concept
2. Document successful patterns for team knowledge
3. Create refactoring guide for future contributors

**Long Term** (Future releases):
1. Refactor during feature development (when touching code)
2. Consider architecture changes to reduce coupling
3. Evaluate if file size is truly a problem (vs. code quality metrics)
