## Abstract
We document and evaluate a practical algorithm for removing halfspace constraints from convex polyhedra represented in H-form (intersection of halfspaces) while maintaining explicit primal geometric structure—vertex positions, edge connectivity, and face topology. While incremental construction algorithms (Beneath-Beyond, Sutherland-Hodgman) and dynamic convex hull structures (Chan 2010) are well-established, the inverse operation in primal space lacks accessible treatment in standard references. Our **topology-based vertex reconstruction** exploits the structure of removed vertices to guide directed line search, yielding near-linear deletion time in N on our benchmark suite (Section 5.6). On typical instances where few vertices are affected, empirical cost scales with the local modification rather than total polytope size. Benchmarks show order-of-magnitude speedups (23×–862×) over incremental reconstruction baselines (Section 5.3).
Additionally, we document: (1) a **clipping completeness repair** addressing a known issue in naive 3D Sutherland-Hodgman extensions where "orphaned faces" cause missing vertices (Appendix C); and (2) a **lazy bounded check** using standard techniques (normal-direction convex hull, dirty-flag caching) to answer boundedness queries in O(1) when cached (Section 4).

1. Operate in dual space (requiring costly conversion back to primal mesh)
2. Rebuild the entire polytope from remaining halfspaces
3. Maintain only algebraic feasibility (LP tableaux), not geometric structure
### 1.3 Contributions
This work documents and evaluates four practical techniques:
1. **Topology-Based Vertex Reconstruction**: A deletion algorithm that reconstructs new vertices via directed line search along plane-pair intersections. The geometric insight is elementary (vertices with 2 remaining planes lie on a line), but we are not aware of an accessible documented treatment. Empirically, the algorithm exhibits near-linear scaling in N on our benchmark suite when few vertices are affected (Section 5.6).
2. **Clipping Completeness Repair (Plane Addition)**: A fix for a known issue in naive Sutherland-Hodgman extensions to 3D: when a clipping plane removes all vertices from an existing face ("orphaned face"), new vertices defined by that face may be missed. The fix is conditional O(N²) enumeration, triggered only when orphaned faces are detected (Appendix C).

**Can we simply dualize?** By projective duality, removing halfspace H from polytope P corresponds to removing point h from the dual hull. Chan's structure supports this operation efficiently.
**Why we don't**: Four practical considerations favor primal-space operation:
1. **Topology preservation**: Applications need explicit mesh structure (face vertex orderings, edge connectivity) for rendering, collision detection, and CSG. After a dual-space deletion, recovering primal topology requires O(F) face enumeration where F is the total number of faces—this conversion cost is proportional to the *total polytope size*, not the *local change*. Our primal approach updates only the affected region, achieving output-sensitive cost proportional to the topological delta.

The dual simplex method handles constraint deletion algebraically: the deleted constraint's slack variable becomes sign-free, and pivot operations restore feasibility (Chvátal, 1983). However, LP methods maintain **algebraic** state (bases, tableaux), not **geometric** structure. A feasible basis tells us nothing about vertex coordinates or edge adjacency.
**Relation to Dual Simplex Pivoting**: Our topology-guided line search bears geometric similarity to dual simplex pivots—both traverse the edge skeleton of the feasible region. However, the objectives differ fundamentally:

We have not found a widely used “inverse clipping” procedure that removes a halfspace while directly maintaining a usable primal mesh (vertices/edges/faces) without rebuilding; this motivates documenting and evaluating a practical approach.

## 3. Algorithm
### 3.1 Core Insight
When halfspace H clips a polytope, it creates new vertices at edge-plane intersections. The inverse operation—removing H—should "unclip" these edges, extending them until they meet other constraints.
**Key observation**: A vertex V on plane P is defined by planes {P, Q, R, ...}. After removing P:
- If |{Q, R, ...}| ≥ 3: V remains a vertex (just loses P from its incident set)
- If |{Q, R, ...}| = 2: V lies on edge Q ∩ R, which now extends until hitting another plane
The topology of the removed vertex encodes the search direction. We extend along Q ∩ R (a line) until finding the first constraining plane in each direction.

### 3.5 Degeneracy Handling
**Multiple planes at a vertex**: When >3 planes meet at a point (degenerate vertex), different plane pairs may find the same new vertex. We handle this via:

### 3.6 Unbounded Polytope Support
Our implementation represents vertices in homogeneous coordinates (x, y, z, w):

The current implementation includes independent batch enumeration in tests for cross-checking; integrating an automatic “validate then rebuild” mode is future work.
**Empirical reliability (measured)**:

## 7. Discussion
### 7.1 Limitations
1. **Asymptotics**: Typical deletions scale near-linearly in N on our benchmark suite, but worst-case behavior is superlinear (Section 5.1). For very large N, fully dynamic convex hull structures (via duality) may be preferable despite implementation complexity.
2. **Linear plane scan**: The `line_search` subroutine iterates over all active planes (O(N) per search). For N < 1000, this linear scan outperforms hierarchical structures due to cache locality and branch prediction. For N > 1000, a **Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH)** or BSP tree over plane halfspaces could reduce line search to O(log N), yielding O(V_r · K² · log N) typical complexity. This optimization is not implemented; the current design targets the N < 200 regime common in interactive applications.
3. **Sequential deletions**: Batch deletion of k planes currently requires k separate operations. A batched algorithm could potentially share line searches.
4. **Numerical precision**: The implementation uses 64-bit floating-point arithmetic with ε-tolerance (ε = 10⁻⁷), **not** exact arithmetic or adaptive precision predicates. This is a deliberate trade-off: exact arithmetic libraries (e.g., CGAL's exact predicates) add significant complexity and overhead. Our approach uses spatial hashing with 10ε tolerance for vertex deduplication, which handles typical floating-point drift. For highly degenerate inputs (many near-coplanar planes), users may need to pre-condition input or increase ε. Validation is available for debugging, and integrating an automatic rebuild fallback on validation failure is future work.

The core geometric insight—that vertices with two remaining incident planes lie on a line and can be extended via line search—is elementary, but we are not aware of an accessible treatment in standard references. Our implementation exhibits near-linear scaling in N on typical instances in our benchmark suite, with a documented superlinear worst case.
The practical contributions are:
1. **Topology-based reconstruction**: Using removed vertex structure to guide directed line search. On our benchmarks, this achieves order-of-magnitude speedups over both brute-force local enumeration and batch reconstruction (Section 5.3).
2. **Clipping completeness repair**: A fix for the known "orphaned face" issue in naive 3D Sutherland-Hodgman extensions (Appendix C).
3. **Lazy bounded checking**: Standard dirty-flag caching applied to the textbook boundedness criterion (normal directions positively span ℝ³).
4. **Unified unbounded handling**: Standard homogeneous coordinates supporting bounded and unbounded polytopes.
For the plane counts common in interactive geometry pipelines (tens to hundreds in our evaluation), the algorithm provides a simple, practical alternative to batch reconstruction. ## Appendix C: Clipping Completeness Bug and Fix
### C.1 The Problem
During implementation testing, we discovered a subtle bug in the standard Sutherland-Hodgman clipping approach when applied to incremental polytope construction. The bug manifested when certain plane configurations caused faces to lose all their vertices during clipping.
**Symptom**: When constructing a polytope from 11 half-space planes, the algorithm produced 11 vertices instead of the correct 18 vertices.
**Root cause**: The `clip_by_plane()` function only created new vertices at **edge-plane intersections**. It failed to discover valid 3-plane intersections that:
