# Release Notes: v2.141.0 - MCP Phase 2 Complete

**Release Date:** October 6, 2025
**Type:** Minor Release (MCP Integration)
**Status:** ✅ Ready for Release
**Sprint:** Sprint 22

---

## Overview

v2.141.0 completes MCP Phase 2 by connecting MCP tools to actual CLI implementations. Agents using Claude Code or other MCP clients can now perform real operations instead of receiving mock responses.

**Highlights:**
- 🚀 **Real Operations:** 4 MCP tools connected to actual implementations
- 🔧 **Error Handling:** Comprehensive error reporting with chains
-**Parallel Health Checks:** Inherited from v2.140.0 (14-40% faster)
- 🤝 **Agent-Ready:** Production workflows for Claude Code

---

## What's New

### MCP Tool Integrations

#### 1. scaffold_agent - Real Project Scaffolding (PMAT-6017)

Agents can now scaffold actual MCP agent projects via the MCP protocol.

**Before:**
```json
{
  "success": true,
  "message": "Agent scaffolded successfully" // Mock only!
}
```

**After:**
```json
{
  "success": true,
  "data": {
    "project_name": "my-agent",
    "template": "mcp-server",
    "output_dir": "./my-agent",
    "quality_level": "extreme",
    "message": "Agent project 'my-agent' scaffolded successfully"
  }
}
```

**Features:**
- Real file creation on disk
- Template selection (mcp-server, stateful, hybrid, calculator)
- Quality levels (standard, high, extreme)
- Feature flags support
- Configurable output directory

**Usage in Claude Code:**
```
Use the scaffold_agent tool to create a new stateful agent
called "github-watcher" with extreme quality level
```

---

#### 2. validate_roadmap - Real Roadmap Validation (PMAT-6019)

Agents can now validate roadmap structure and ticket consistency.

**Features:**
- Real roadmap file parsing
- Ticket file existence checks
- Checkbox/status consistency verification
- Detailed error and warning reporting

**Example Response:**
```json
{
  "success": true,
  "data": {
    "valid": false,
    "errors": [
      "Missing ticket file: TICKET-PMAT-9999.md"
    ],
    "warnings": [
      "TICKET-PMAT-6001: Checked in roadmap but status is Red"
    ],
    "message": "1 error(s) found"
  }
}
```

---

#### 3. health_check - Real Project Health Checks (PMAT-6020)

Agents can now run actual health checks with parallel execution.

**Features:**
- Real build checks (`cargo check`)
- Real test execution (`cargo test`)
- Real coverage analysis (`cargo llvm-cov`)
- Complexity checks
- SATD detection
- Parallel execution (14-40% faster from PMAT-6010)

**Example Response:**
```json
{
  "success": true,
  "data": {
    "healthy": true,
    "checks": [
      {
        "name": "Build",
        "status": "Pass",
        "message": "Project builds successfully"
      },
      {
        "name": "Tests",
        "status": "Pass",
        "message": "All tests passed"
      }
    ],
    "summary": {
      "total_checks": 2,
      "passed": 2,
      "failed": 0
    }
  }
}
```

---

#### 4. generate_tickets - Real Ticket Generation (PMAT-6021)

Agents can now generate actual ticket files from roadmap entries.

**Features:**
- Real ticket file creation
- Sprint auto-detection from roadmap context
- Status mapping (checkbox state → ticket status)
- Dry-run mode for preview
- Skips existing tickets

**Example Response:**
```json
{
  "success": true,
  "data": {
    "generated": 3,
    "generated_tickets": [
      "TICKET-PMAT-7001",
      "TICKET-PMAT-7002",
      "TICKET-PMAT-7003"
    ],
    "skipped": 5,
    "message": "Generated 3 ticket file(s)"
  }
}
```

**Time Savings:** 10+ minutes per ticket → 1 second

---

### Error Handling Infrastructure (PMAT-6022)

Added comprehensive error handling for all MCP operations.

**New Type:**
```rust
pub struct McpOperationResult {
    pub success: bool,
    pub data: Option<Value>,
    pub error: Option<String>,
    pub error_details: Option<Vec<String>>,
}
```

**Benefits:**
- **Consistent Format:** All tools return same structure
- **Error Chains:** Full context for debugging
- **Agent-Friendly:** Clear error messages
- **Graceful Handling:** No protocol violations

**Example Error Response:**
```json
{
  "success": false,
  "error": "Missing required parameter: 'name'",
  "error_details": [
    "Missing required parameter: 'name'",
    "Parameter extraction failed"
  ]
}
```

---

## Architecture Improvements

### Code Reuse Pattern

Refactored CLI handlers to extract reusable internal functions:

```
MCP Handler → *_internal() ← CLI Wrapper
            Business Logic
```

**Benefits:**
- Zero duplication between CLI and MCP
- Single source of truth
- Easier testing
- Maintainable codebase

**Example:**
```rust
// Shared business logic
pub async fn validate_roadmap_internal(...) -> Result<RoadmapValidation>
// CLI uses it
async fn validate_roadmap(...) -> Result<()> {
    let validation = validate_roadmap_internal(...).await?;
    print_validation(&validation);
}
// MCP uses it
async fn validate_roadmap_internal(...) -> Result<Value> {
    let validation = validate_roadmap_internal(...).await?;
    Ok(json!(validation))
}
```

---

## Breaking Changes

**None.** This release is fully backward compatible with v2.140.0.

All existing CLI commands work identically:
```bash
pmat scaffold agent my-agent --template mcp-server  # Works as before
pmat maintain roadmap --validate                     # Works as before
pmat maintain health --quick                         # Works as before
```

---

## Upgrade Guide

### From v2.140.0

No migration needed. Simply upgrade:

```bash
cargo install pmat --version 2.141.0
```

### Testing Your Upgrade

```bash
# Verify version
pmat --version  # Should show: pmat 2.141.0
# Test MCP tools (if using Claude Code or MCP client)
# scaffold_agent, validate_roadmap, health_check, generate_tickets
# Test CLI (should work identically)
pmat maintain health --quick
pmat maintain roadmap --validate
```

---

## Performance

### Inherited from v2.140.0

- **Health Checks:** 14-40% faster via parallel execution
  - Two checks: 70s → 60s (14% faster)
  - Five checks: ~200s → ~120s (40% faster)

### New Automation

- **Ticket Generation:** 10+ minutes → 1 second per ticket
- **Real Operations:** Actual work being done (file I/O, builds, tests)

---

## Known Issues

### 1. scaffold_wasm Not Connected

**Issue:** `scaffold_wasm` MCP tool still returns mock data
**Reason:** No WASM scaffolding implementation exists in codebase
**Workaround:** Not applicable
**Fix:** Planned for future sprint (requires WASM scaffolding engine)

### 2. Long Operations May Timeout

**Issue:** Large scaffolding operations or comprehensive health checks may timeout
**Workaround:** Use `quick` mode for health checks, smaller templates for scaffolding
**Fix:** Planned for Sprint 23 (progress streaming)

### 3. No Progress Reporting

**Issue:** MCP operations run silently until completion
**Workaround:** Use dry-run mode where available
**Fix:** Planned for Sprint 23 (MCP progress notifications)
