# Settings Reference

Every control in the Settings window, by tab, page, and section, with the
`config.yaml` key it edits. Open Settings with `F12` (`Cmd + ,` on macOS).
For how edits are previewed, saved, and reverted, see
[Saving and reverting](#saving-and-reverting). For the full key list with
types and defaults, see the [Configuration Reference](../CONFIG_REFERENCE.md).

## Saving and reverting

- Edits preview live in every window. Nothing is written to `config.yaml` until you
press **Save**.
- **Save** writes the config and any profile edits together. **Revert** restores every
window to how it was when Settings opened or last saved.
- An `* Unsaved changes` marker in the footer tracks pending edits. Closing with
unsaved edits asks whether to save, revert, or cancel.
- Font fields wait for **Apply font changes**. Save applies them too.
- Prompts, agent commands, plugins, shader installs, and shell integration write to
their own files at once. Save and Revert do not apply to them.
- A small reset arrow next to a control restores its default as an ordinary edit.
- A failed save, or a `config.yaml` that changed on disk, shows a banner at the top.

Some settings take effect only after a restart or in new windows. The control is
badged, and the banner after Save lists them.

## Internal keys

par-term writes these itself. Settings does not show them, and edits would be overwritten.

- `collapsed_settings_sections`: Settings' own collapse state
- `last_working_directory`: recorded on exit for startup_directory_mode: previous
- `last_download_directory`: recorded after a download
- `last_update_check`: timestamp of the last update check
- `last_notified_version`: suppresses a repeat update notification
- `skipped_version`: set by Skip This Version; shown and cleared on General › Updates
- `shader_install_prompt`: state of the first-run shader install prompt
- `shell_integration_state`: state of the shell integration install prompt
- `agent_skill_state`: state of the agent skill install prompt
- `integration_versions`: installed integration versions
- `insecure_trigger_names`: computed at load, never serialized
- `unaccepted_risk_trigger_names`: computed at load, never serialized
- `shader_configs`: per-shader overrides, edited through each shader's controls
- `cursor_shader_configs`: per-cursor-shader overrides, edited through each shader's controls
- `pane_backgrounds`: per-pane images, edited row by row in Panes › Pane Backgrounds
