# Multimodal Search Fusion for OxiRS
## Overview
This document describes the multimodal search fusion implementation for OxiRS v0.2.0. The system provides intelligent fusion of text, vector, and spatial search modalities with support for multiple fusion strategies and score normalization methods.
## Architecture
### Core Components
1. **MultimodalFusion Engine** (`src/hybrid_search/multimodal_fusion.rs`)
- Implements 4 fusion strategies
- Supports 3 normalization methods
- Handles empty modality cases gracefully
2. **SPARQL Integration** (`src/sparql_integration/multimodal_functions.rs`)
- SPARQL function bindings for multimodal search
- Configuration management
- Result conversion utilities
3. **Comprehensive Tests** (`tests/multimodal_fusion_tests.rs`)
- Real-world conference venue search scenarios
- Performance benchmarks

## Fusion Strategies
### 1. Weighted Fusion
Linear combination of normalized scores from different modalities.
**Formula:** `score(d) = w₁·text(d) + w₂·vector(d) + w₃·spatial(d)`
**Use Case:** When all modalities are equally important and you want fine-grained control over their influence.
**Example:**

### 2. Sequential Fusion
Filter with one modality, then rank with another.
**Use Case:** When you want to use a fast modality for filtering and an accurate modality for ranking.
**Example:**

### 3. Cascade Fusion
Progressive filtering with thresholds (fast → expensive).
**Use Case:** When search operations have different costs and you want to minimize expensive operations.
**Example:**

### 4. Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF)
Position-based fusion that combines rankings from multiple modalities.
**Formula:** `RRF(d) = Σ 1/(K + rank(d))` where K=60
**Use Case:** When you want a simple, effective fusion that doesn't require score normalization or weight tuning.
**Example:**

## Score Normalization
### 1. Min-Max Normalization
Scales scores to [0, 1] range.
**Formula:** `norm(x) = (x - min) / (max - min)`
**Use Case:** When scores are in different ranges and you want uniform scaling.
### 2. Z-Score Normalization
Standardizes scores to mean=0, std=1.
**Formula:** `norm(x) = (x - mean) / std`
**Use Case:** When you want to account for score distributions and handle outliers better.
### 3. Sigmoid Normalization
Maps scores to (0, 1) using sigmoid function.
**Formula:** `norm(x) = 1 / (1 + exp(-x))`
**Use Case:** When you want smooth, bounded normalization with gentle handling of extreme values.

### Parameters
- **text** (optional): Text/keyword query string
- **vector** (optional): Comma-separated embedding values (e.g., "0.1,0.2,0.3")
- **spatial** (optional): WKT geometry string (e.g., "POINT(10.0 20.0)")
- **weights** (optional): Comma-separated weights [text, vector, spatial] (e.g., "0.4,0.4,0.2")
- **strategy** (optional): Fusion strategy - "weighted", "sequential", "cascade", "rankfusion"
- **limit** (optional): Maximum results (default: 10)

## Performance Characteristics
### Latency Targets
- **Weighted Fusion**: <10ms (normalized score combination)
- **Sequential Fusion**: <20ms (filter + rank)
- **Cascade Fusion**: <50ms (3-stage progressive filtering)
- **Rank Fusion (RRF)**: <15ms (position-based combination)
**Overall Target**: <100ms for multimodal fusion

### Precision Metrics
- **Precision@3**: >0.66 for combined queries
- **Precision@10**: >0.9 for balanced multimodal search
- **Recall@10**: >0.85 with RRF fusion

### Use Case 1: Conference Venue Search
**Scenario**: Find ML conferences near San Francisco with good semantic match.

**Scenario**: Find Italian restaurants near Times Square with good reviews.
**Modalities**:
- **Text**: "authentic Italian restaurant fine dining"
- **Vector**: Semantic embedding of cuisine preferences
- **Spatial**: "POINT(-73.9857 40.7580)" (Times Square)
**Strategy**: Cascade fusion (fast text filter → semantic ranking → location verification)
### Use Case 3: Academic Paper Search
**Scenario**: Find papers on quantum computing near a research institution.
**Modalities**:
- **Text**: "quantum computing algorithms"
- **Vector**: Citation embeddings
- **Spatial**: Institution location
**Strategy**: Weighted fusion with high vector weight (0.6) for semantic accuracy

### Memory Efficiency
- Uses references (`&[DocumentScore]`) to avoid copying
- Lazy evaluation for normalization
- HashMap for O(1) URI lookups during merging

## Future Enhancements
1. **Adaptive Fusion**: Learn optimal weights from user interactions
2. **Query Expansion**: Automatic expansion of text queries
3. **Result Explanation**: Provide explanations for ranking decisions
4. **Distributed Fusion**: Support for distributed multimodal search
5. **GPU Acceleration**: GPU-accelerated score normalization for large result sets
6. **Time-based Fusion**: Add temporal modality for time-series data
