What to lint.

Either a commit range (resolved the same way as the CLI’s positional argument, defaulting to commits ahead of the base branch when None) or a single literal message (the --stdin equivalent).

Lint every non-merge commit in this range.

Lint this message directly, bypassing git entirely.
